KCRG : Cedar Falls Teen Dies After Falling Off Car | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and Weathe

I was replying to the fact that Lumbergh made the statement that the victim was "standing on the trunk of a moving vehicle" - but nowhere in the article did it say the victim was standing - I was saying nothing about it moving or not moving. It doesn't matter either way - it's not a good decision - but there is no reason to make it sound worse than the article states. In high school - I saw someone sitting on the hood of a moving car in a parking lot and fall off - he had head injuries but recovered. I also saw a girl standing on the bumper of a moving truck - she fell off and was drug by the truck. She received deep gashes to her knees. Teens do things that don't seem like a big deal to them. They think the chances of them getting hurt are slim and even less that they'll die. They do get hurt - they do die - but that doesn't mean that commenters on here need to make it sound worse than the article states. Maybe the victim was standing on the trunk - but the article doesn't say that.

It makes a big difference when it comes to "what were they thinking" - sitting on the trunk of a car doesn't seem like something that would end in a death. Remember - this is a 17 yr old....decisions made at 17 are not always the best ones. But there is no reason to as*sume they were standing or dancing on the trunk - is sitting on the trunk of a moving car safe? Absolutely not. Does it seem like it's no big deal? To a 17 yr old - probably.

KCRG : Branstad: Immigrants Should Have to Prove Status | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and W

I can't say that I agree with your point that calling them "illegals" fosters racism - illegal isn't a race it's a status. If someone is here illegally what would you propose we call them? They are not immigrants - that is an insult to the immigrants who have come to America through legal channels and done all that is required for them to be here legally.

I am not pro-Branstad or anti-Branstad - I have yet to make my mind up about my choices for this fall's election. My humble opinion is that if I'm in a bar and I look young - the police have every right to ask me to prove that I am old enough to be there. What is the difference from asking someone to prove they are legally in the country? Is it age discrimination because they asked me but not others?

True - the line about the smoke pouring in the windows is the reporter - but the comments about being tortured - while they could have been edited - those are her words and they are dramatic.

I agree - she sounds a little dramatic - like the line about smoke "pouring" into her windows. We have multiple neighbors who fire pit - and sometimes on the same night - but we've never ever had a smidge of smoke - we can smell them but to say smoke is pouring in the windows has to be an exaggeration.

KCRG : Three Girls Sue School District Over Strip Search | KCRG-TV9 | Cedar Rapids, Iowa News, Sports, and

Both genders lie - not just school girls. Unfortunately - it's not just school age either - people of all ages lie and try to cause problems - look at couples going through a difficult divorce - not all of them - but there have been many parents who have lied to try to get an advantage over the other parent. It sounds as if you are biased against school age girls making accusations because of a past incident with friends. It is too bad that our justice system can be railroaded by people in power & with money but you can't judge this event by what happened with your friends. Maybe the lawsuit was filed because no criminal charges were brought against the teachers. Maybe it wasn't filed when it happened because the investigation was going on and once the families found out no criminal charges were being filed - they decided to file the lawsuit to have someone held accountable for their actions. We won't know their reasoning until they go to court.

GazetteOnline.com : Kidnapping definitely qualified as a tragedy

I'm sure the whole event is considered a tragedy to Ms. Daniels & her family. Thank goodness she survived and I pray there are no long term psychological scars. Ms. Wilbert is appalled, shocked disgusted because the word tragedy was used by The Gazette to indicate that the clerk was not killed. While I agree that it might not be the best word to use, I'm not sure that this level of irritation (appalled, shocked, disgusted) is warranted. Ms. Wilbert should save her disgust for the kidnapper or for Randy Lee Putnam - both are worthy of her shock & disgust.

GazetteOnline.com : Don't Hassle Nursing Moms

Good point. I don't think there is anything wrong with breast-feeding but I am also discreet enough to throw a blanket over my shoulder. Just because you CAN do something doesn't always mean you SHOULD do it. I understand it is Ms. McCall's right to breastfeed in public and as she so compassionately put it - if someone is uncomfortable with it - it's not her problem it's theirs. That is such a boorish attitude to have - we all must co-exist in this world. Why can't we make the attempt to make each other as comfortable as possible? I certainly don't expect her and her baby to eat in the bathroom - she should have a comfortable place to breastfeed. But I think I should be able to be comfortable in a public place too.
