This is true in business and politics as well - the guy/gal who gets ahead is not the smartest one. It's the person who has a goal and the pitbull tenacity to bite onto it and never let go - and can convince other people that they know what they're doing even if they've got no idea beyond 'get to Z'. That often includes ruthlessly stabbing backs and grinding peons to dust as cogs in your machine as necessary. I'd say that last bit doesn't necessarily apply to artists, but I've read enough biographies to know it's certainly non-zero.

Thomas Kinkade would be a good example crossing the artist/business boundary. He's not super talented as an artist, but has created a huge empire of peons churning out smarm for old people.

It's the first panel that gets me - I just cannot imagine a Starbucks drone here in California telling a customer to stop pouring cream. If a yoga pants mom wants to order a drip coffee and make her own latte by throwing 2/3 of the coffee out, demanding the cream pitcher be refilled, and then filling the rest up with cream they will just smile (while digging their fingernails into the meat of their palms). I've seen it many times.

Because a yoga pants mom will just take your head clean off with no remorse (they have none) or regrets (they've never had any where other people are concerned). Then again, Jane doesn't look like a yoga pants mom.

Being able to see everyone else's bullshit is little help, Will. You only know when you're doing it wrong, not when you're doing it right. Like asking a music critic (even a really good one) to play a 12-string guitar. Hanna looks like she knows that in the last panel.

Well that answered a question I never even knew I had: do drug dealers need two weeks notice?

As a health and wellness thing, this is so ridiculous that it must be real.

Old ladies... they're the worst. Or the best, depending. They've had 70 years of your crap and they just don't give a damn any more. So f@#$ your societal niceties. F@#$ your standing in line, we're barging right to the front. F@$#% your 'don't take all the crab legs and stuff them in your plastic lined purse', I've had four husbands and six kids and it's all about me now!

Oh, and dear, that look doesn't suit your face, you'd just look so nice if you'd smile. Here, have a werther's candy.

Amen - after my dire no activity period my criteria was basically 'leave the house and walk around the block'. All you have to do to win is show up enough times to make it a habit.

Also, everything artistically about this one is particularly nice for me. Layout (that panel squash in and stretch out), angles, artwork, that silhouette, the colors.

Plus, your standards go up, which means you keep fewer connections. That's a good thing (no more drama queens, leeches, abusers, liars, flakes thank you) but means you have fewer options.
