Daily Camera.com: : Christopher Gebers charged with murder in death of CSP cadet near Longmont - Boulder Daily Camera

Here is my take on the link that you posted. Quote: "First degree murder of a police officer, firefighter, or emergency medical services provider in the performance of his or her official duty is a distinct offense." In other words, it is different than "first degree murder" of an ordinary citizen who is not a law enforcement officer, fireman, or emergency medical services provider. Although the first degree murder charge is prohibited when "causing a death of anyone (besides a criminal participant) while committing, attempting, or fleeing the scene of arson, robbery, burglary, kidnapping, sexual assault, sexual assault of a child, or escape from lawful custody", it is not prohibited in regards to first degree murder of a police officer,

Go Eagles! Oftentimes, teams that employ a full-court press don't like the reverse situation of being pressed in return. I hope the Eagles respond, tit-for-tat, and press the heck out of ThunderRidge.

Buffzone.com: CU sports from the Daily Camera : CU football: Buffs drop 2OT thriller to Bruins - Buffzone

Sefo needs to play better in the clutch. So far, he plays just good enough to lose. It's a mental thing that he needs to overcome. I consider accuracy to be the most important attribute for a quarterback. Although I have seen very little of Jordan Gehrke, I have a hunch that he may be more accurate than Sefo. Although Gehrke had a couple of bad overthrows in the USC game, he was not properly warmed up when he entered the game. His subsequent throws were quite good. I would certainly like to see how Gehrke performs and competes during a game when the outcome is still in doubt. Gehrke seems to know where the ball should be placed on his throws. If the defensive back is behind the receiver, Gehrke makes a conscious effort throw a low ball, which is exactly where the ball should be placed. If the receiver gets behind the defensive back, then Gehrke throws the high ball.

The late George Allen, former head coach of the Washington Redskins, used to say that the most important possession in a football game is the opening possession in the third quarter. This is where big shifts in momentum can occur.

CU has received the opening kickoff to start every game this season, whereas all our opponents have received the kickoff that starts the second half. I know that CU has won at least one or more pre-game coin tosses. Yet, whenever CU wins the opening coin toss, CU has never chosen to "defer" to the second half. I think this is a mistake. In the first half, teams are more likely to waste the opening game possession. In contrast, teams that receive the second half kickoff have a better understanding of what they need to do and are generally more productive with that possession. There is statistical evidence that supports this conclusion. So far, CU has received 5 opening game kickoffs. The results: a single field goal and no touchdowns. In both of our conference loses, ASU and Cal went on an offensive tear after receiving the second half kickoff. ASU scored on two consecutive possessions. Cal scored on three consecutive possessions. If CU is forced to start the second half on defense, CU simply needs buckle up and play better.

Buffzone.com: CU sports from the Daily Camera : CU Buffs beat Hawaii with stiff defense, record day from Nelson Spruce - Buffzone

Except for a couple of holding and pass interference penalties, the defensive secondary played very good pass defense. They were breaking on the ball and making plays on the ball. Of course, this was only one game, and the Hawaii QBs were frankly not very good passers. So, I won't get too giddy until I see how the defensive secondary performs against some elite passing QBs. Nonetheless, I liked what I saw in this one game and hope that this is a portent of things to come. It has been 15 years since CU had a set of defensive backs who could regularly make plays on the ball. This last occurred when Ben Kelley, Donald Strickland, and Damon Wheeler were playing together in the defensive backfield. Certainly, Deon Figures, Chris Hudson, and Michael Lewis were good individually, but I still consider Kelley, Strickland, and Wheeler to be the best set of defensive backs who played together on the same Buffs team. There is potential for having one of the better pass defenses at CU, if the current set of defensive backs at CU can continue to build upon their performance in the Hawaii game.

Buffzone.com: CU sports from the Daily Camera : Colorado football: Buffs get run game going against Arizona State - Buffzone

I have seen football teams that looked hopelessly bad on defense during the first game of the season. Yet, after the second or third game of the season, something starts to click and the defense does a complete turnaround and plays very well for the rest of the season. Hopefully, the Buffs can be one of those teams. Right now, I have only one other minor comment to make. When Powell burst up the middle on his long run, he looked back and saw a lone fast-closing ASU defender who was giving chase. I don't think Powell had enough speed to outrun the last defender, but Powell certainly could have carried the ball an extra 5 or 7 yards closer to the goal line if he had not broken stride and hesitated in feigning a change-of-direction cutback. To me, it makes absolutely no sense for a ball carrier to break stride in a foot race with a lone defender who is giving chase from behind. The ball carrier should just keep on running and try to get as many yards as possible before he is tackled by the fast-closing defender. An extra 5 or 7 yards nearer to the goal line could have been the eventual difference between a field goal and a touchdown. The Buffs settled for a field goal after Powell's long run.

For CU's defensive line, it was a small step in the right direction. To disrupt an opponent's run game, you need penetration. One yard of penetration is all it takes to cause some disruption. In the 3rd quarter, it seemed as though a switch had been flipped; the Buff's defensive line suddenly started penetrating and tackling the ball carrier behind the line of scrimmage. Hallelujah!

The defensive front line had a poor showing; the DTs and DEs only made 4 tackles during the entire game. When our linebackers and secondary are forced to make the vast majority of tackles, this becomes a big problem. The defensive line did a lot of slanting, but failed to maintain gap integrity while doing so. The loss of gap integrity occurred most often due to overpursuit. To a lesser extent, it was also due to an inability to fill the gap from the backside; the backside pressure would sometimes get cut-off -- thereby allowing the runner to cut back across the grain and into the resulting gap. I think each guy on the defensive front needs to concentrate on his assigned task -- on doing his job, and not trying to do someone else's job. I would also like to see more penetration from the defensive front line. One yard of penetration is all that I ask.

HiHoe, please answer truthfully: "Does the study of historical events have any value?". If your answer is yes, then you are admitting that there might be value in rehashing past events.

I agree that Kordell did not have a good game and was out-of-synch with his passing. Again, I lay most of the blame on the game plan. In the first half, Kordell was only called upon to pass the ball in 3rd down and long situations, which is not ideal. (The best down for passing is 1st down.) On 3rd and long, the Husker defense was fully anticipating the pass and geared up to stop it. By half-time, Kordell's confidence was completely shot. I even heard some boos coming from the home crowd which did not help matters. In retrospect, Kordell should have been allowed early in the game to establish his passing rhythm by calling for a few easy pass completions on early downs -- a short dump off pass or screen pass to a running back might have done wonders in building up Kordell's confidence. Instead, the coaches put Kordell in a really bad spot in the first half by limiting his passing to difficult 3rd and long situations.

I want to make one correction to my previous post. The two CU wide receivers for that game were Michael Westbrook and Rae Carruth. Charles Johnson was drafted in the first round by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Spring of 1994 and was no longer a member of the Buffs 1994 football team.

I still put the blame for that loss on the conservative offensive game plan formulated by former offensive coordinator Elliot Uzelac. In the first half, the play calling was so predictable: run on 1st down, run on 2nd down, then pass on 3rd down, if necessary. The stubborn and pig-headed Uzelac mistakenly thought that CU could simply blow the Husker defense off the line of scrimmage with a brute force running game. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Early on, it became obvious that CU's game plan was not going to work. Yet, Uzelac ignored what he was seeing and continued calling running plays on 1st and 2nd downs that yielded meager yardage. On 3rd and long, which occurred all to often, the Husker defense knew exactly what was coming and could tee off to stop the pass. Uzelac's stubborn pride as an "old school running coach" may have been hurt, which is why he insanely continued to call running play after running play on early downs. In the second half, Uzelac finally swallowed his pride and came out throwing on 1st downs. But, it was too late. The damage had already been down. For the Nebraska defense, it was a no-brainer that the Buffs would have to start throwing on early downs. So, Nebraska did the smart thing by adjusting their defense for the second half to key on stopping the pass on early downs. It seemed like the Nebraska defense knew exactly what the Buffs were going to do on every single play in the game. Before the game started, I thought that one area where the Buffs might have a big advantage was at the wide receiver positions with Michael Westbrook and Charles Johnson. I was expecting some big plays from our wide receivers. But, the big plays never materialized. The Buffs attempted only two long passes in the game; both passes fell incomplete. After the second long pass fell incomplete, Uzelac in my opinion prematurely shut down any further probing of the Nebraska secondary with deep passes. He must have thought, "we just can't pass against these guys". Obviously, I think he was wrong. Many years later, Michael Westbrook would break his silence about this game by criticizing the conservative play calling. We had two studs at wide receiver, and we failed to properly use their talents. We should have been force feeding the ball to Westbrooks and Johnson from the very beginning, instead of pounding the ball with futility on the ground.

Joleen Reefe, the police spokesperson, was quoted as saying that "she did not know the dog owner's condition or if he was released from the hospital". Whenever serious injury or death is involved, it is common practice for the police to withhold the names of the injured or dead until family members or next of kin have been notified. I am sure that you would not want to learn of an injury or death to a family member or close relative via the news media. I also think it is better to get most the facts straight before releasing information that is either inaccurate or could prejudice the investigation.

Daily Camera.com: : CU-Boulder team ready to showcase reinvented toilet - Boulder Daily Camera

The sanitation in India is simply disgusting. If you have ever spent any amount of time in India, you will probably know what I mean. In India, due to a serious shortage of sanitation facilities, such as modern toilets and even crude pit toilets, a lot of people have no choice except to relieve themselves in the streets. And, if they have no toilet paper handy, they will just use their bare fingers and hands for wiping. During daylight hours, you will often see a lot of human fecal matter scattered on the ground. However, during the dark of night a lot of the fecal matter will "mysteriously" disappear and be gone when people wake up in the morning. What happens during the night is this: small nocturnal feral pigs will come out of hiding to eat and feed on human feces. So, there you have it -- recycling of human waste in its most primitive form.

The scholarships are probably not full-ride scholarships. For example, at the Division I level in baseball, each team is only allowed 11.7 scholarships. Typically, there may be about 34 players listed on the roster of a baseball team, but only about 24 of these players are actually placed on scholarship. The rest of the players are walk-ons. So, in our example the 11.7 scholarships are divided among 24 players with each player receiving a partial scholarship ranging from 25% to 50%. It is extremely rare for a baseball player to receive a full-ride 100% scholarship.

Buffzone.com: CU sports from the Daily Camera : Kyle Ringo Blog: Cody Hawkins joins Ohio State football coaching staff - Buffzone

Cody is going to be an excellent coach because he is extremely smart and has good leadership skills. In my opinion, he is going to be a fast rising star in the coaching profession. I think that Cody was unfairly rapped by many CU fans simply because he was the son of the head coach. I have never subscribed to the nepotism allegations and still think that Cody was the best available QB on the team during his stint at CU. The thing that I liked best about Cody as a QB was his quick decision making. He had the vision to see where to throw the ball and to get rid of the ball quickly. Although Cody was often criticised for his lack of mobility, a lot of fans might be surprised to learn that Cody was actually sacked about half as often as Tyler Hansen, who was generally considered to be a more mobile QB. The stats don't lie. Although Cody and Tyler took almost the same number of snaps during their respective careers at CU, Tyler was sacked twice as often because Tyler had a tendency to hold onto the ball too long. I also think that Cody was unfairly rapped because of his 5'11" height. Height isn't everything when it comes to being a good QB. Who would you rather have as a QB -- the 5'11" Russell Wilson or the 6'8" Brock Osweiler? This was a decision facing the Denver Broncos a few years ago. The Broncos opted to draft Osweiler ahead of Wilson, who was drafted in a later round by the Seattle Seahawks. I just hope this mistake does not come back to haunt the Broncos if they advance to meet the Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Another area of improvement that I have noticed in the last two games is in kick coverage. It was probably the lone bright spot in the Washington game. In that game, I think the Buffs actually managed to pin Washington back on the 15-yard line during one of the kickoffs. I am seeing more and more kick coverage guys running down the field without getting blocked. In kick coverage, it is always better to not engage the blocker unless absolutely necessary. So, putting a juke here or there in order to avoid a blocker is a good thing.

I thought the defensive backs had their best game of the year. Although the DBs had a couple of missed tackles, the defensive pass coverage was excellent. I also like the fact that some of the DBs are starting to jump the route being run by the receiver. In other words, they are doing a better job of anticipating the route that the receiver is trying to run and then jump on that route. Chidobe Awuzie did this twice when he jumped on slant routes being run by the receiver to knock the ball down. If he continues to jump on pass routes, the interceptions will eventually come. Admittedly, this can be high-risk and high-reward, but I prefer this more aggressive approach instead of sitting back passively and allowing opposing quarterbacks to carve up the secondary.
