GazetteOnline.com : The Big Analysis -- Wisconsin

Iowa D is designed for Wisc., not Mich. 4 receiver sets with 2 running threats, including Minor who is much better than expected, really stretches our big LBs. Tolzien is not that mobile, and he stares down his receivers. Our 4/3 should force some mistakes, while forcing Clay to run laterally. I think Iowa has a stronger passing game that can score more quickly and will force Wisc to try to pass instead of generate 7 minute drives. 21-16 Iowa.

GazetteOnline.com : The Pylons -- Michigan

Seems like Forcier doesn't like throwing into coverage, so if nobody is wide open, he takes off, thus the reason he was their rushing leader vs MiSt. This is not your dad's Mich OL. They are challenged delivering the ball from the Center to the QB in the air, they are not good at opening holes for the backs, and are not great vs the pass rush, another reason Forcier takes off. He could have a long day vs Norm's 6 Seconds of Hell, who won't let him step up in the pocket. Their DL is solid, but the secondary has problems covering the seems in zone. If the Hawk passing game gets all the receivers involved, including RB's, short, medium, and long passes, then we could have a Statement game on National TV.

GazetteOnline.com : VIDEO: Where exactly Angerer looks before a snap

I thought he either deserved a Heisman or an Acadamy Award late in the Indiana game, after he attempted to hurdle the blockers and landed on the shoulder. He appeared to be in a world of pain, yet managed to throw that duck in the endzone for the final TD. He did not seem as athletic vs MiSt, but I wasn't sure if that was pain or rain. He's definitely a 4th quarter guy, but you are so right, Notre Dame doesn't have a Pat Angerer, and he's exposing himself to serious injury if he continues this show in the Big 10.

Marc, thank you for asking these questions. So much more interesting than other people's interviews. Wouldn't you love to know what Forcier was thinking when he came out of film room this week, about the prospects of breaking it up the middle?

GazetteOnline.com : VIDEO: Bulaga's frank assessment

Marc, if you ever get a chance to ask Brian: We have had some problems with a linebacker lining up outside the DE, and they aren't being accounted for, so they arrive unblocked around Rick's or the RB's neck. Do the players recognize this, and are they taking steps to pick these guys up a little better? I know they hate to announce which man they're blocking, but,,,,, The line looked a lot better pass blocking last week, but he was spot-on that zone rush blocking was causing some problems.

Marc, Great interview. If you are ever looking for questions from your audience: 1) The 'critics' say Rick stares down his receivers. I'd like to know if he has ever considered wearing a dark visor, and what the drawbacks are. 2) He has had some throws that were behind the receiver. Is that because of a route problem? He is really showing improvement.

Marc, You do the best analysis in Hawkeyeland. Everything I've read says Cent Mich was out of sync, and NAU is not UNI. AU's defense is said to be extremely fast, so we will have our hands full. One more game where penalties and turnovers will decide it. I see a low scoring affair, 17-14 Iowa.

Marc, I don't know if it was by design, or what, but our pass rush seemed pretty anemic last week. We've got to get more pressure from a 4 man rush, or we are going to have a very long day with the LBs downfield covering receivers.

GazetteOnline.com : Last Call -- UNI (with Stanzi video)

Marc, I would hate to see you degenerate into the permantent pergatory of Beer O'Clock, so would like to offer that a hundred years ago, a punt was a change of possession, while a kick was a change of position, or an attempt to score in the case of a drop kick. A kick was a live ball, there for whoever recovered it, unlike a punt. Over time, God created rules committees who do what they do, and everything has gotten skrewed up. But the fact that the kicking team recovered a blocked kick, and kept possession for second down has some historical basis. As for why the clock stopped, that will just make you crazy.

GazetteOnline.com : Week 1 -- Passing an Appalachian State-sized kidney stone

We learned Dace and ARob can play, and that is very good news. Interior OL is way behind where they need to be, and DL has got to bring more pressure. But think about it: how many better QB's are we going to face in the Big 10 than Grace? Wi., In., Mi., Nwstrn., even MSU all have inexperienced QB's.

GazetteOnline.com : VIDEO: RB Paki O'Meara talks about his new role(s)

Paki will be as good as his supporting cast decides to make him. If they make second level blocks for him like Bruggy, Bulaga, Meyer, Stross, Morse, and Brodell did for Shonn last year, then we're going to have some great highlight films. If they fail to hold blocks and can't square-off the LB's and CB's, then no one is going to be able to excel. Can't wait to see if Paki can read blitzers and get low. Would also love to see Rivals et al, get a lesson in the impact that heart can have.

Marc, my biggest surprise is how few surprises there are, and I blame you for predicting a lot of these decisions weeks ago, like Ballard, Klug, and Richardson. Congrats! I do think that it would be stupid to sacrifice Jewel vs UNI and ISU if he needs a couple weeks to heal, and/or the choice of Paki, with his attitude, may mean KOK wants a guy who can read and deal with a blitzer. Also, seems like a good time to say Thanks! for keeping the blog interesting, every single day, for the last 8 months.

GazetteOnline.com : Stanzi wants to move beyond 'game manager' for Hawkeyes

Marc, seems to me that we became a play-action team because we ran out of WRs, and exploited it with Shonn. Now we have an accurate QB with a great arm, OL depth that we could only have dreamed of in 2007, we have 6 competent WRs, plus 3(?) TEs,,,,and questions at TB. Should KOK decided to run a straight-up passing attack to keep those corners and safetys off the line, I will not be ashamed to be a Hawkeye. No law yet saying we have to be a run-first offense, and I question whether anybody in the Big 10 can play great 'man' defense.

Marc, Always thought Jake was a class act, right up until the Rittenberg quotes. How many times did the cameramen loose Rick on a roll out because his fake was so perfect they didn't realize what he was doing? Watch the way Rick has his feet positioned to get the maximum velocity on the ball. Is that just natural, or are those kinds of mechanics developed? No, I'm sorry to say it, but those were the comments of a bitter young man who is in denial, whose ego will not allow him to accept the fact that he had every chance to distinguish himself, and chose to take a knee.

Marc, what I saw of Paki during games last year, his shoulder pads were always 90 degrees to the line of skrimage, he did not demonstrate patience in waiting for the OL to create a hole, and seemed fixated on trying to break loose around the tackle. I will be very pleased to see those problems resolved, because they are going to have to be if he is the next man in.
