KATU - Portland, OR : Exclusion Day is coming... do your kids have all their shots? | Health | Portland City Center News

My point is that if you are going to draw a line in the sand, why not do it right from the start? If a healthy environment is that important, it should be important all year long.

"We want to make sure children can go to school in a safe, healthy environment free from vaccine-preventable diseases" Exclusion day is mid-Feb, 6 months into the school year! What about having a healthy environment from September through January? Seems to me that it should be Sept 2 (or the first day of school).

Yes, distraught, as in upset, worried, and concerned. Did I choose the wrong adjective? Sorry.

His caregivers are his family, and they are distraught. I pray you never have anyone in your family suffer in this way. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease to live with. Your comment is shameful, and I hope his family never sees it.

KATU - Portland, OR : Tough times force a mother to work, but homeschooling remains priority | KATU.com - Portland, Oregon

Yes, the world can be a cruel, cold place. But I do not need to send my kids to school in order to learn this! Rather than send them to school to deal with bullies, we choose instead to work within our community, volunteering, raising funds, gathering food, and working with the homeless. There is plenty of cruelty in this world; how ironic that one would feel it necessary to send their child to school to experience it even more! And yes, kids needs to learn their 3 Rs, plus some. Are the public schools a good place to do this? Yes, for some. No, for others. Many good options exist, including public, private, charter, and homeschooling. For our family, homeschooling allows us to speed along when the work is easy, and take our time when we hit rough spots, or when we want to spend the day at OMSI, or stuff food boxes for Thanksgiving. Children need to do the book work. Children need to grow to become good citizens. Neither requires public school enrollment.
