For starters, let me say that I'm very grateful to be served and protected by the police. I have police friends that are remarkable people. In my opinion, the problem is in the training, police officers should have more training, deeper training with dealing with mentally ill citizens.

Fast-forwarding past trying to approach him slowly and non-threateningly, past trying to verbally engage him, I would have started with acknowledging that there's strength in numbers so I would have rallied as many of my fellow officers, surrounded him, subdued him, restrained him, removed him, and isolated him until he was calm enough to be medically evaluated...

Serving and protecting does not only mean the healthy. Sick people don't necessarily have the same understanding of the importance of the commands of a police. I feel that the police should be extensively trained in dealing with the sick, especially the mentally sick...

Yes, to a certain extent. As workers in the community extensive training in how to handle people with various health conditions, mental health issues, Alzheimers, dementia, etc, should be implemented. B/c working in Kent County, or any other county, is not always about dealing with criminals, there's many medically sick people and as officers, sword to "serve and protect", they should be able to know the difference...
