... which sounds like someone speaking from personal experience. In which case, you'd know that each person's own depression feels like the worst to THEM. It's not something you can really compare evenly across the board.
Also, in that case, I'm sorry for you. Depression sucks.
If you're not speaking from experience, then I'm not sure your opinion on the matter is entirely valid.

Even if he didn't handle it in a manner which you deem correct (how can one do something "loudly" in a typed comment, anyway?), I'd rather that someone stopped to take a break when they realize it's much needed than continue on into burnout. Yes, you can cowboy up and soldier on, but not forever. You'll ruin yourself doing that if you don't know when to stop. Taking a break was a wise choice.
I also don't think anyone should feel ashamed for "fawning"... I think folk are just happy because their friend is happy. Rejoicing because someone they like is back and doing better. What's wrong with that?
I see the point you're trying to make but also would venture to say you may be focusing on the negative aspects just a bit.
