GazetteOnline.com : Hlas column: Hawkeyes have just one real concern this week. Namely, the Arizona Wildcats

You can be sure that the defense will come out about as fired up as they can be. With Norm Parker watching from his hospital bed, the D will NOT want to let the old man down. I think you can look for Clayborn to have a career high night in terms of tackles/sacks/forced fumbles. But at the same time, I don't think this is a team that needs a big "WIN IT FOR COACH NORM" kind of speech before the game. These guys have proved in the first two contests that they are methodical pros on the field, and this game will prove it to the rest of the country. Putting up a great D night with Norm in the hospital is simply a given that doesn't even need to be mentioned in the locker room. Very much looking forward to the game.

GazetteOnline.com : Vander Plaats: Iowa voters likely won't retain justices over same-sex marriage issue

Vander Plaats may have been able to beat Branstad - after all, Iowa's conservatives are the same ones who gave PAT ROBERTSON a victory in the 1988 Iowa Caucus. But if VanderPrick had won, the GOP would have had a much lower chance of unseating Culver in the fall.

GazetteOnline.com : My No. 2 game in Ferentz Era - Iowa-Ohio State, 2009

No mention of Ferentz's decision to take a knee at the end of regulation? Not necessarily to second guess, but that was a big part of the game. Hawks get the ball with some change left on the clock and a time out about 30 yards away from field goal range (with a rookie, freshman quarterback at the helm for sure), and the head coach elects to head to OT without so much of a whimper. I can understand his reasoning, especially in hindsight (and I'm not second guessing him), just making a point that in the world of football decision making, deciding to go to overtime when you have the ball, some clock and a timeout while on the road at Ohio State is an unusual one.

GazetteOnline.com : POLL: Where do you want the Big Ten 2011 football title game to be held?

If it's indoors, it's not the Big Ten (there aren't anymore domed stadiums in the conference now that MInnesota opened their new outdoor stadium). Let it be outdoors, and let it be at Soldier Field.

The last time I checked, it's signs like the one in Mason City and Fox News/talk radio mouth frothers that are leading the divide.

Even comparing Lenin to Hitler is a crock ... Lenin may have been ruthless at times, but he was no genocidal maniac (that was Stalin). Lenin was actually opposed to and spoke out against antisemitism. I don't agree with socialism, but even in its purest form it doesn't come close to nazi fascism.

GazetteOnline.com : My No. 6 -- 2002 Minnesota

That was a great day. I remember hesitating to jump on the field afterwards, as some lady cop was spraying mace in the direction of everyone who did ... so I followed some other kids a few yards down the sideline and we just jumped down and ran like hell. You can really fly on that astroturf! Got to touch floyd of rosedale, dallas clark, brad banks, and the uprights. A very good day.

GazetteOnline.com : Top 10 games of the Ferentz era -- Let's hear your picks

Sorry woody, but I think you mean 2004 for your #5 ... in 2005, Iowa lost in overtime to the Wolverines at Kinnick to end the home winning streak. It was a sour day. I was a grad student at the time and the student section was bummed the heck out during the clearing out of Kinnick.

GazetteOnline.com : Cedar Rapids airport director to talk with businesses about attracting low-fare carrier

Hey Centralia Guy - Do you think that maybe competition has something to do with Delta's pricing? Delta's pricing to ATL from CID is also the same as from MLI because DL knows passengers will drive an hour and 30 minutes to MLI if the fare is significantly cheaper. However, if you check fares at an airport with no non-stop competition to ATL, the fare is significantly higher. Delta's fare from DSM to ATL is $442 round trip on the same dates, using the same equipment. Why's that? Well, folks in DSM don't typically want to drive two and a half hours on I-80 to CID to fly anywhere. So, the price goes up. I wouldn't knock MLI or AirTran (or the writer's example of a similar sized airport with an entrenched low-fare carrier). Plus, Delta and AirTran have been in a fare war for a few years now anyway ... why else do you think there are about 500 seats a day between Moline, Ill. and Atlanta?
