GazetteOnline.com : Iowa RBs: Three better than two, but two out of three ain't bad

But do you get a guy reps vs. EIU so he's not coming into a B10 game cold turkey? That's about what happened to Brad Rogers last year. I'm assuming injuries of course, which at the RB position isn't too huge of an assumption.

Marc- Really appreciate your coverage of the Wegher situation. There's been info when available but you haven't allowed things to get out of hand in the comments section. Moving on to the RBs, it will be very interesting to see how KF and Erb handle the RB situation vs. EIU. ARob is there of course, but he's carried 20+ times in a game only twice. That means there will be a need for an RB2...hopefully in mop up time, but maybe when the game is still early. Do you go the "loyalty" route w/ no burned redshirts and play Paki? Or do you burn a redshirt w/ Johnson without knowing how much PT he'll get once Jewel is back? The staff has certainly become more liberal in playing true freshman, so it wouldn't surprise me one bit. Plus, Paki has had his opportuinty to show what he can do w/ meaningful reps and that didn't go well. I think Paki will be #2 on the depth chart going into EIU but I'm not sure that's how it will play out. 10 more days!

GazetteOnline.com : Wegher remains absent

I agree w/ you Marc. The clock is certainly running out on Wegher's "welcome mat" back to the team. That's not w/ any inside knowledge, but when the days start to turn into weeks, it's just not fair to the rest of the team. Hopefully he makes the best decision for himself and his family. If he's no longer a Hawk, so be it. Iowa will be fine at RB unless the injury bug hits again. In the short term, I think that you have to get one of the freshman RBs enough reps in practice to be ready. I don't think EIU will be an issue, but there's 11 games after that where I won't be comfortable with Paki as the #2 back if Jewel or ARob goes down.

GazetteOnline.com : The Contingency -- Offensive line

The contingency plan at tackle worries me a bit. A lot of young inexperience in the 2 deeps, rather than the seasoned inexperience of a guy like Zusevics. It will be interesting to see who makes a jump to become that 7th or 8th guy during fall camp.

At the beginning of the season, one of these guys is going to be left out. However, as we are all very familiar with, injuries happen at RB, and I fully expect all 3 of these guys to get meaningful carries as the season goes on. Hopefully 3 deep will be all Iowa needs this year.

GazetteOnline.com : Readers' No. 2 -- 2008 Penn State

Since I was 4 years old when Iowa beat Michigan in 1985, I am glad that this game became my generation's "1985" game. Certainly a game I'll never forget. I had an extra ticket to this game and couldn't find anyone to take it back home. The Hawks were having a disappointing season w/ the close losses, it was going to be cold, and on paper there was chance that this game could have been an easy win for Penn St. I ended up selling the ticket on Melrose for around $15. Needless to say, some of my friends are still kicking themselves over their decision.

GazetteOnline.com : Florida QB loves Iowa's O

Kid plays for one of the best high school programs in the country. He plays against some of the best competiion in the country. I'm thrilled with this pickup. His highlights confirm the fact that you have to be pretty good to play at Aquinas. The Hawks are still in on a lot of good players, guys that are highly recruited that they offered early in the process. It has the potential to be a very good class on paper.

GazetteOnline.com : With Vincent, Hawkeyes might be finished at WR in 2011

Maybe it's because they moved Shumpert to WR in the 2011 class. There's quite a few young WR in 2011 but hardly any upperclassmen on scholarship. WR on scholarship in 2011 Seniors: McNutt Juniors: Davis Sophomore: Cotton, Shumpert (maybe) Freshman: Martin-Manley, Shepherd, Grant, Vincent Certainly thin w/ the upperclassmen. Would be a great place for a JUCO WR, but I realize that the Hawkeye staff doesn't look at that route very often.

GazetteOnline.com : Hampton pleads guilty; Bernstine pleads not guilty

I doubt Bernstine gets suspended. It's his first strike. Remember, Calloway got one game last year for operating a moped while intoxicated. What Bernstine did was less of an offense in my opinion. Not sure about Hampton. I could see him getting a game especially if he was the one responsible for starting the fights. What I think goes in the favor of both of these guys is that it's their first offense. It will be one game at the most. As mentioned above, the biggest issue for these two is whether it costs them on the depth chart in their respective position battles.

GazetteOnline.com : 10 rookies -- OT Markus Zusevics

The fact that both Gettis and Zusevics are 4th year juniors is comforting. If the Hawks have to replace starters I'd rather have it be w/ redshirt juniors vs redshirt freshman. Also, I've heard that Zusevics has a bit of a mean streak. And he was getting after it w/ the defensive lineman in the spring practice. A little bit of a mean streak can offset not being the biggest guy in the world (i.e. Bruggeman)

GazetteOnline.com : 10 rookies -- TE Brad Herman

Marc- Do you remember the context of Herman playing as a true frosh? I remember sitting at Kinnick and wondering why in the world this guy was out there in scrub time vs. Maine. Was it Moeaki injuries? He hardly played at all that year and last year all he did was line up in one package where he motioned from the slot into an H-back blocker. Really haven't seen what he can do as a receiver or lining up at the line of scrimmage. Hard to believe he's a junior already--really hard to believe Reisner is a senior!

GazetteOnline.com : 10 rookies who'll matter in 2011

One thing to remember, Ferentz has drastically changed his view of playing freshman over the past few years. Do I think Morris will play over Hunter/Nielsen/Johnson/Tarp/Davis? No. But only two of those guys are back next year. If the coaches see Morris as the guy to replace Hunter in 2011, then I think they get him ready this year, even if it seems like a waste to us on the outside. There's a big difference between the preparation knowing you have a chance to play (plus special teams) vs. knowing you won't play on a weekly basis because of a redshirt. If you look at the incoming recruits, I think Morris has the best chance to play as a true frosh. The coaches know him well, he knows the coaches, and some of the other incoming LBs could benefit from the redshirt year: Gray is coming off an ACL, and Kirksey looks like he needs some time with Doyle. Don't know much about Poggi so it's tough to say how ready he is.

GazetteOnline.com : Iowa-Michigan a 2:30 deal and other kickoff guesses

Marc, I've always wondered if the school gets any say in the decision for a night game. Obviously, Iowa didn't have much of a choice last year because they played 3 games at night and Ferentz didn't seem too pleased with it. If the BTN wants to make a game like the MSU game a night game, can Iowa shoot down that proposal as the home team? I'd love to see a couple of 2:30 games at home. Early afternoon is the perfect time for the tailgating/game mix.

GazetteOnline.com : A good account

Tarp looked pretty good. In the tackling portion of the scrimmage, he made a couple of really good plays. My friend and I had a few "who was that?" moments, and every time the dust settled it was Tarp who had made the play. This was without the luxury of the 1st string DL in front of him. Very much looked the part, as did Hunter, Johnson, and Nielsen. You can tell these guys have been in the program for a while.
