From what I heard the land was originally farm land. The farmer sold it off. That is his fault. As far as the shopping, I can't stand Spartan. They are way over priced. I drive by all 3 stores daily and still manage to only shop at Meijers. I don't like Meijers that much, but it is much cheaper. Part of the reason we moved out here was mostly due to my wife's work moved southeast, out of the city, and mine is already southwest, therefore we were both driving 25 and 30 miles one way to work. Now we are driving 10 and 15 miles one way, in opposite directions. I was born and raised in the U.P. For the location for work, price, and value, this is as close as to what we could get to the life style we were accustomed to. As far as the whole shopping thing, what else could they put up that Holland/Grandville don't have. They are both only 15 minutes away. And yes we are home owners here, not condo.
Why do we need a new Spartan store? There are three within a five mile radius. They say they want to tear down two and combine them. What is wrong with restoring. Meijers does it, and doesn't have a problem. Plus combining stores would mean they would be eliminating jobs. This is just adding to the unemployment.
My wife and I just moved out of Grand Rapids. We were looking for more of a country setting, and we found our dream home here. This new building would be right behind our house. Now they want to turn this in to commercial settings?!? Where does it end? Why couldn't they build further down the road by Ace Hardware and leave this residential, if they really had to? I am still for restoring their old building though.
But if you ask me, the only reason why the commission is even considering this is greed. They just want the baseball complex, and not have to pay for it. What the kids really need are more fields.....
