Tech Cocktail : Allen Stern, Early Tech Blogger and Entrepreneur Passes Away

Thanks for saying good words about our friend Allan. Your old blog and CenterNetworks are still in my Google Reader feed due to respect. I was really missing Allen's posts when he focused on LetsTalkFitness and his company, but when I saw the pure art he was creating, I was happy for him, and especially happy to see him getting healthier. Just like you, Frank, he will live forever in the history as one of the pioneers of the social media! RIP, Allan!

TechCrunch : Why I’m Craigslisting My iPads

I think the most popular use of video chat is neither family, nor business - it's adult entertainment and it won't ever be mainstream due to all the considerations and complications that come with it.

I disagree. Windows-based tablets are more useful than iPad is and ever would be. They might not be as sexy, but more useful - definitely. Even the virtual keyboard on Windows tablets is better designed. The flaw of UMPCs is the low screen resolution. I did use an UMPC extensively and that was the only reason I stopped using it - low vertical resolution prevented many native non-tablet apps not to fit on the screen, but other than that, I was a happy camper. With the low resolution, Remote Desktop and the alternatives such as LogMeIn and GoToMyPC sucked, too.

TechCrunch : NTP Sues Apple, Google, Microsoft And Others Over Wireless Email Patents

This is perverting the idea behind the patents. I think US government has to finally step in and do the right thing fixing the broken patent system. Just like patent trolls, big companies are forced to file generic and often ridiculous patents to have an arsenal to fire back. It works for the government as they get paid for the ridiculous number of patents and get income tax on hundreds of millions, but does this serve the public in a good way? Not at all!

Thanks, Ryan! You know some people (me included) get sensitive when they see charges on their debit cards. Thanks for working with me and welcoming my feedback! Good luck with your project! When you release an Android app and I'm when I need for a cab, you'll be my first choice!

UberCab look like fraudsters. First, they authorized/charged my card with $0.01 and right after that - with $100. I called them up, they have some voicemail system, you can't talk to real people. I tweeted, they care less - no response there either. UPDATE: They responded saying every time you look on their website, they authorize your card with $100 without even bothering to ask or note anywhere. In general, they are not allowed to authorize without my explicit permission. If they had to verify my card with $0.01, that's fine, but how about the $100 that followed right after they verified my card? If I don't receive a prompt response from them, I'm disputing the authorization and filing a fraud claim with my bank.

TechCrunch : FCC Endorses Skype, Tweets That People Should Use It

I didn't expect something like this from FCC! First, Skype isn't the only, isn't the cheapest. Secondly, it's based in Luxembourg and pays mostly taxes there, not here. And, thirdly, a governmental organization should promote vendors using open standards and not proprietary technology.

Every service goes down, so, calm down. But what I don't understand why Automattic is hosting both free and VIP blogs on the same infrastructure and not giving extra redundancy to paying customers. I also don't understand why VIP customers are forced to use the WordPress VIP branding and also force them to link tags to WordPress.com. Anyway, Bank of America, which to me is way more important than WordPress.com and TechCrunch.com is down a lot more often than even Twitter, so, spend the downtime thinking positively everybody and don't be so mad that WordPress.com is down and you cannot blog first about it, because your site is down, too! Geez!
