even better, in the book there's Cottia, who is OSTENSIBLY marcus' girlfriend but is in reality both marcus AND esca's girlfriend.

(ahhh subtext)

Mulder, DEFINITELY

(also I am now picturing Scully & Black Widow having tea together and sharing their stories of being diminutive red-haired powerhouses who are surrounded by men who are just desperate to be pegged)

I never imagine Bertha as anything but biracial tbh.

although that might just be because I read 'Wide Sargasso Sea' and I liked it a LOT.

(also should you, or anyone else, be in the market for non-white-dude-Heathcliff, may I recommend Andrea Arnold's adaptation of WH, which as far as I know is the first adaptation with black Heathcliff.)

DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT read Eragon.

Chuck Palahniuk (in general)
Bret Easton Ellis (American Psycho is the only one I've attempted but.... no. just no.)

also, honourable (?) mention to Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, which is WEIRD and tbh Blade Runner is the best thing that could have happened to that book. see... the electric sheep of the title are NOT A METAPHOR. book-Deckard's greatest, wildest dream is to own a non-electric sheep (because animals are so scarce and have become a status symbol. he has a replicant sheep instead), and... yeah it's just weird.

wow, how many other people did Paolini rip off? (I've not read the Belgariad)

I once did an experiment where I took the synopsis of Star Wars: A New Hope and switched the names/places with the ones in Eragon.

It fitted a little TOO well...

Swiss Family Robinson

just... UGH. (I was forced to read it for school. would not have chosen it by myself.)

Atlas Shrugged, which I tried to start once and put down again five pages later because my GOD those people are insufferable

also The Fountainhead, which, again, is populated entirely by truly awful, awful people.

Eragon (which is LITERALLY the plot of star wars transplanted to middle earth, written by a smug little shit of a teenager, and it is TERRIBLE.)

anything by James Joyce

the later books in the Merry Gentry series, which seriously make me want to sit Laurell K Hamilton down and explain to her that a mystical and improbably hot sex scene every three pages is NOT NECESSARY, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WOMAN. (it's a shame because the first book was actually alright, it just... went downhill a bit after book three or thereabouts)

oh, and then there's the Left Behind books. which are about the Rapture & the ensuing events. I don't know why I decided to read them. possibly i was bored. but they are awful. really, really, truly awful.

hey, as long as I can carry on thinking that God looks a lot like Alanis Morissette then that's fine by me.

(that movie Dogma has a lot to answer for...)
