The depression which has struck Spain and Greece is going to spread to other Euro-zone nations and thereby impinge on the shipping activity through the port of Hampton Roads. Furthermore, we do not know the implications of a full-on European collapse which could further deteriorate the shipping traffic through this port. I think it would be imprudent, at this point, to spend this kind of money on expanding the port. Improvements and renovations? I can see that. But expansion would be out of the picture in my mind. I see serious global contraction and thus less shipping traffic through Hampton Roads in the near and medium term. This looks like a loss for the local citizens.
