We applauded because this man was a danger to our families and neighbors. He has a history of aggressive behavior, he breaks into houses, he crawled into a stranger's bed while she slept, and so on. We contacted the police because we felt unsafe in his presence, because he's a sex offender, because he was casing our houses, *not* because he was an addict. Plenty of addicts toil in obscurity, and plenty of sober people take the lives of others.

Don't get me wrong, this man belongs in prison. He's a con-artist, and a danger to himself and the people around him. But the American criminalization of drug use has solved nothing for our society, is incredibly racist, and much too costly for our ailing economy ( http://tinyurl.com/69pd6c ).
