The ONS's figure for deaths 'involving' Covid – where Covid is mentioned on the death certificate – comes out a bit higher than the NHS figure for deaths within 28 days of testing positive. The ONS numbers lag by about two weeks because of the delay in registering deaths and collating the data. Making an adjustment for the last two weeks of missing data, the ONS death toll involving Covid is currently about 120,000.

The ONS also tallies the number of death 'due' to Covid – where the death certificate gives Covid as the underlying cause of death. They also regularly publish the proportion of deaths involving Covid that are declared as due to Covid. That figure tends to fluctuate a little around the 90% mark.

The bottom line is that while the 'within 28 days' count and 'underlying cause' count are based on slightly non-overlapping sets of cases, they are coming out almost the same.
