You may be referring to cicada killers. They grow to an inch or more long, resemble a wasp and bore holes into the ground to go after cicadas and or their nests and eggs. They will kill them and bring them out of the holes. If left alone, they normally do not bother people but their size does frighten people.

How awful for this little girl to have witnessed her siblings die in front of her. Why do people have children when they have no intentions of actually being a parent and loving and caring for their children? There are so many people out there who for whatever reason are unable to have children; and then there are people who have children and honestly don't know how lucky they are to have been blessed with such a wonderful gift from God.

I have to disagree. CPS seems to be overloaded with cases, which is why there have been so many recent cases in our area concerning children who have been harmed or put in harms way. The CPS caseworkers are overloaded with cases because of budget cuts or what not. Just recently there was a story about a father who shot and killed his 3 children and then attempted to commit suicide and failed. The father will live, but he took the lives of his 3 children so that his ex wife couldn't take them from him; my point is that he also was their biological or 'parental' father as you put it, and that did not stop him from killing his children. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/metropolitan/... There was a reason this child was taken from their custody; and them abducting her from a safe place proves they are not responsible parents.

It's possible that his father has exhausted all other known options for trying to control his son. We don't know that...we don't know anything else from his past. I definitely wouldn't bash the father for this though - he did what he thought was right. Sometimes hiding things like this make situations worse in the long run. I'm sure the father knew his son would be prosecuted, and that his picture may even end up on the news...how that makes him a bad parent I'll never know. He made the right choice. In the end, it may be the only thing that saved his son.

My heart has ached for this poor child from the beginning. I don't understand how someone could do this to a child. This child suffered for so long during the abuse they put her through, but now she is in God's hands. I pray for the family of this girl, and for everyone else involved too. The accused will sit in jail for the rest of her life to hopefully re-live her actions in memories and nightmares...but ultimately she will have to answer to only one person some day.

The Madison Center is and always will be useless. It doesn't matter whether you have awesome insurance or are on medicaid. You have to wait a month for a financial appointment, and then another month for an appointment. They want your money and could care less about your health. In-Patient programs consist of drugs, drugs, and more drugs. If you get to see a therapist, consider yourself lucky, especially if you get to see the same one twice...on a weekly basis. They are overloaded with too many patients, because they only see $$$$.

Two deaths within 11 weeks of each other...the first she got off by them claiming it was SIDS; then she's out shopping and is only being charged with neglect and obstruction of justice? Is that seriously all that baby's life was worth? If anything, the first death of a child in HER care (IF is was truly an accident) would have opened her eyes and made her realize that this was preventable. Instead, she goes out shopping and leaves the baby home alone??? She deserves to sit in jail and think about this - for the rest of her life.

I am sorry for your loss. I too hope you get answers. Nothing will ever replace losing your only daughter - however I pray that God eases your pain. Unfortunately I have been at quite a few area hospitals in the past year (as a visitor to a patient) both in and out of state. Many hospitals are shorthanded and I have been witness to them forgetting medication, arguing with another nurse about "whose job that is", ignoring an IV machine that an alarm is going off on, or even not answering a nurse's call button for sometimes more than 10 minutes. As much as we are charged for a hospital stay, we deserve MUCH better service than we sometimes get. We TRUST them to take care of us, we should not have to worry about whether we are receiving the proper care.

The other reason this continues to happen is the old saying "It won't happen to me". No one believes that consuming a few beers and driving poses a threat. Unfortunately you don't have to be intoxicated to the point of not being able to walk...you can simply consume a few drinks at dinner, get behind the wheel and be INVOLVED in an accident. The accident claims a life and you are now without a license for the rest of your life. People still drive without a license; no one knows until you get caught. Some people don't THINK about what they do, before they do it. And you are correct...3 years per child is exactly why nobody takes this seriously.

There are signs referring to rip currents; those signs are out there all of the time...and are disregarded. People simply believe "it won't happen to me". The waves crashing into the rocks and over the side of the pier should be enough of a warning to anyone. Even if there was a sign saying the pier was closed, someone would still walk around to get to the pier.

My sympathies to the families involved in this tragic accident. However, I would like to answer a few things of which some of you have questioned. First, when the red flag is flying on the beach, it means the beach is closed...regardless of whether it is because of the rip current or because of too much bacteria in the water. If you see a red flag, and you get in the water anyway, you are doing so at your own risk. There are still lifeguards present, and they will tell you to get out of the water, but only if you are in the guarded area. If you insist on swimming in the unguarded area when the red flag is up then YOU are responsible for the choice you made. Second, it says they were in the water and were swept towards the pier with the tide. The winds were out of the NNE yesterday which would certainly make sense with what the story said. As far as there being guards or some safety net on the pier...for anyone who had ever been to the beach when the water is rough, if you go out on the pier, you are most definitely making a huge mistake. It's basically common sense. If you are unsure of whether you will make it out of the situation, then you don't put yourself in it. Third, there are signs EVERYWHERE from when you enter the beach, to the walkway in front of the lakefront, all the way out to the pier, explaining how dangerous the rip currents can be...and to obey all signs / flags and whatever. Don't get me wrong, this is a very sad, but unavoidable situation. I pray for all families involved, and for everyone at the beach yesterday who witnessed this tragedy.
