HERE IS ALL MY MONEY

As EeMmBb said above, we talked about it. He really wanted to 1) buy a diamond ring and 2) surprise me with the proposal and the ring. Which he did! But it came after we had talked about that we wanted to get married, and by when, and when engagement should probably happen by (for us end of summer before his annual family reunion). I also showed him the types of rings I like, though the actual one I got was a surprise. You are both in the relationship, both making a huge life step and decision, both have values surrounding that -- I firmly believe that it should be fully talked out beforehand.

I haven't read this full blog post in awhile so YMMV and a general grain of salt for APW, but at the time it really helped me express my feelings about the whole thing: http://apracticalwedding.com/2012/11/weddings-fem...
(Particularly these points - sorry about the caps, it's the headings copy and pasted)

1. YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO A SAY IN YOUR FUTURE. [...]
5. WHEN YOU’RE IN A SERIOUS RELATIONSHIP, YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO CREATE A NEW TIMELINE THAT REFLECTS BOTH OF YOUR NEEDS. [...]
6. YOU HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO NOT LET THE IDEA OF HOW THINGS “SHOULD” BE GET IN THE WAY OF REALLY HEALTHY, NECESSARY CONVERSATIONS.

Feel free to email me at msse627 at yahoo and I maybe have some tips (native Yooper!) - off the top of my head near Munising: Pictured Rocks cruise, Grand Island, I believe there is good canoeing and birding to the west in Au Train (songbird trail? it's been awhile!), dinner at the Brownstone Inn. Not sure how far you plan to stray from Munising area, but Marquette is about 45 minutes to the west and has some great dining options, food coop, etc., but is less of the solitude of a cabin. HAVE FUN!

ETA cell service can be spotty away from the bigger towns (i think there's a dead zone btw Munising and MQT) so a road atlas or map is always a good idea, and a little bit of planning ahead!

One million bajillion upvotes for everyone for the UP love! I am a native Yooper and just got back from bringing my baby there for the first time and also burying my stepmom near her family's old farm, and gosh if I'm not getting a little choked up reading about how you guys love the UP? I need more coffee *sniff*

Well...it's history of medicine/science, but Holly Tucker's Blood Work about the early days of blood transfusions was fascinating and amazing, and I am squeamish and usually not super interested in those types of things. I think about it all the time and in fact recommended it to my OB/GYN...DURING LABOR, so. Most highly recommended.

The best freedom! Gah it feels so good to do that, difficult as it is. You all have my permission to stop reading books you don't like!

Oh totally! Book creepier and better, but I love the movie so much, and it's so atmospheric and well-cast (IMHO), that I think it's a perfect book to read AFTER seeing the movie, and take those images with you.

(When I was 12-ish watching for the first time, I fell head over heels for Larry Olivier, which...watching/reading as an adult Maxim is not really a Great Catch, but when he kisses his fingers and taps the window of the car I felt some Stirrings and have loved Olivier ever since #dreamboat)

this is wonderful :) I really wanted to get into birding after having a great time casually birdwatching on my honeymoon in santa barbara a couple years ago, and you have reminded me, in my post-baby haze, that this is something i want more of in my life.

Not Apatow, but my husband and I just re-watched Zoolander for the first time in years, thinking oh that was so funny, center for ants blah blah. Yeah we couldn't finish it. Gross and sexist.
