ATTENTION LEFTIST TROLLS: Unlike so many journalists, when I write articles I try to show some humility by, when appropriate, refraining from absolutely asserting things. There is a good reason for this. This passage from a different article of mine (albeit about a completely different topic) sums up my feelings on the matter: "When reporters claiming to be neutral political fact-checkers go beyond mere reporting to state with absolute certainty things they cannot possibly know, they run the risk of churning out political opinion masquerading as high-minded investigative journalism." So you can see why I sometimes insert qualifiers. Although I'm pretty confident in this article sometimes we get it wrong. Facts change, new things happen, and so on. Qualifiers let the reader judge for himself or herself what the facts really are.

I'm not sure what you mean by "authorize." As I wrote in my book, Subversion Inc., ACORN was receiving federal tax dollars way back during the Nixon administration in the early 1970s.

You raise an interesting point, bassett. If you're right, that is a pretty egregious error on the part of HUD. But something doesn't seem right here. Note that ACORN Housing Corp. (a.k.a. Affordable Housing Centers of America) reports in its most recent publicly available tax return at http://www.guidestar.org/FinDocuments/2010/721/04... that it took in $6,184,168 in government grants in the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010 (see page 9 on the PDF).
