They really do mess things up. I'm a teacher (non-unionized, thank goodness), and I teach at a charter school. You are correct. The public school teachers are overpaid. However, not all teachers are public school teachers, and not all of us are overpaid. When you work in all the overtime hours (planning, grading, extra curricular supervision, etc.) the teachers at my school make less than babysitters. I would gladly subscribe to "pay for performance" because I know that there are teachers out there who do the bare minimum and collect while students fail, but I teach in southern AZ, where about 95% of my students are Hispanic, and English Language Learners. Because of the language barriers, unfortunately, a lot of students don't meet standards, and because of their cultural background, school doesn't mean much to them, so they don't care what sort of grades they earn. I consider myself a good teacher, and pay for performance would not give me enough to live on, while it would easily support someone doing a mediocre job somewhere in white suburbia. I had an appointment with my OB today, and he and the nurse were talking about this case, and how awful the actions of late term abortion are. I completely agree, and I told them so. He went on to say that the government is trying to get a law passed that says that if a woman comes into an OB-GYN office and asks for an abortion, they can't tell her "no." The doctors would be required to perform the abortion, regardless of their personal beliefs. That is completely...unfair - the word doesn't even cover it. Despicable? Better. Just because the doctors know how to do a D&C, a procedure that is used to diagnose uterine cancer and remove tissue after a miscarriage, does not make it right to force them to do an abortion. Yes, the process can be used to abort a baby, but it has other uses, perfectly valid uses, as well. The government has no right. End of story.
