I suppose one could make a case for calling the Arab Spring a failure.It could hardly be called an unqualified success,to date and at this point,anyway.But to be fair,such a judgment may be premature,given the undemocratic natures and histories of the region and states.Israel has the advantage of having been (arguably) occupied by the Diaspora.The European component of the Diaspora was often well educated and familiar with the democratic process.Indeed,the contribution of European Jews,and American Jews,latterly,to the development of various political systems,and the running of Democratic institutions in the West,was significant,giving them a real advantage in Palestine and the development of Israel,not unlike Rhodesia and South Africa.Only time will tell if the Arab countries will achieve the economic,social and other changes needed to foster democratic institutions.muchiboy

I would question that a majority of Palestinians want you and all Americans dead.I suspect many,maybe most,Palestinians would gladly emigrate to America for the opportunities there.Likely they wouldn't object to living next door to you,either. And sure,there are many reasons why both peoples should be fearful,even hateful,of the other.After all,a lot of bloody water has passed under the bridge in your country and region.Guilt,like innocence,can be found on both sides.Progress isn't to be found building barriers or walls between one another.Instead,bridges are needed.These are surely,and sorely,missing.When both sides,peoples really,acknowledge the past and present sins committed one against the other , healing may begin.Granted,the longer the conflict continues,the more complex any solution becomes.The ongoing crisis within Islam,and the many problems,e.g.economic,political,social,etc,endemic to the Arab world,are formidable barriers.As much a barrier to peace and resolution as Zionism.muchiboy

I seem to recall that around 1300 Palestinian civilians,many children,were killed by IDF bombs,shells,etc.I think several Israeli civilians died at the hands of Hamas rocket fire.I don't know if you can do morality by numbers,but these are the numbers for what it's worth. I wonder if the fate of those heroic IDF pilots who dropped the bombs killing so many innocent Palestinian kids would be similar to those evil Hamas fighters who fired their rockets killing so few Israelis? Would they burn together in hell? One can only hope. " You know,MixMChess,if the Nazi's had defeated us,somebody would be celebrating the Holocaust this evening,not condemning it.And we certainly wouldn't be having this conversation unless it was in a safe house or dark alley.In other words,the story is told by the victors,not the defeated,the victimizers,not the victims,quite independent of right or wrong,which to me is puzzling and unforgivable. The Israeli policy or rationale of "creating facts on the ground" in Palestine serves to define justice or right and wrong in their own terms,almost preempting dialog,and serves to give the false and misleading impression of validity. Certainly,each point we raise deserves a response and is seldom resolved to the satisfaction of all.Well I guess that's why there are courts of law and judges and unfortunately even wars but there are still appeals and that's what we are dealing with here.And sure,while my views are very unpopular here and else where in the west and I may be way out in left field the fact that many others,including intelligent,well informed and good thinkers,share my views goes a long way to satisfy my reservations.I am indeed in good company. When I read the words of Gandhi I know these are well chosen and wise.They appeal as much to ones sense of justice as they do to the heart.And of course the Jews have their story, too.You are quite capable of telling that story and I feel honored that you take the time and effort to tell it. And as you and Jews every where rightly insist that "we must never forget" i.e. the Holocaust, myself and others of like mind and opinion don't want to see the cause of the Palestinian people i.e.the Nakba lost as are many good causes or tragedies.
