Big Hollywood : Apparently Jon Stewart Won't Tolerate Being Mocked

Okay, so I'm watching the clip and generally enjoying it then MacFarlane tells us that Stewart is the voice of "rational" political thought in this country. By which he means the left/liberal/progressive folks. This is why I stopped watching Family Guy and American Dad.

Big Hollywood : Eastwood Flashback: A Look at 'The Eiger Sanction'

I've always liked Eiger Sanction a lot, but I agree that Gauntlet, Joe Kidd, and Tightrope are also very good even though they didn't seem to get the praise that others did.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #15 'Mad Men'

This is probably going to cost me some positive votes, but Mad Men just didn't do it for me. I gave it a try via Netflix because so many people were raving about it (and, more important, because I learned Christina Hendricks was in it). After watching several episodes I didn't even bother with the last couple from season 1. I agree that it was well-written and well-acted, but I just couldn't find anyone to cheer for. Everyone seemed to be in bed with everyone else--mostly cheating on their spouses. When that wasn't happening there was backstabbing, social climbing, and other assorted poor behavior. Plus the drinking and smoking. Maybe that was the way it was in NYC in the 1960s, but it certainly wasn't the behavior exhibited by the adults I knew as a kid. Maybe the point was that even good and successful people have faults and make mistakes. I can go with that in a movie, but I'll pass on episode after episode of bad behavior (unless maybe it's played for laughs along the lines of Married With Children or The Simpsons).

The Sundries Shack : Oooh! That Evil Netflix! Why I'll Just...Wait. They're Going to Have to Pay How Much? Oh.

This article makes some good points and even at the increased price Netflix is a good value. One problem for me in all this is the way it was handled from PR and loyality to its customers perspectives. My second problem is that choosing just one or the other isn't really a good option. Eighty percent of the items in my queue aren't available via streaming. Streaming is also a problem in that my ISP can't handle the traffic at some times of the day, particularly evenings, which means I either have to wait for odd times or settle for a much lower quality picture.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: # 25 Maureen O'Hara

Well, assuming that "#25" isn't a typo, could it be that she is both #25 and #1? The pic above is from her younger days, so looking at the later years separately put her on the list again. (I'm guessing, of course, but there has to be some explanation for what might otherwise be considered a serious lapse of judgment by the esteemed Mr. Nolte.)

Big Hollywood : Is 'Wipeout' the Best Show on Television?

I (almost) felt the same, but with MXC gone I stuck with Wipeout and it's gotten better (or just grown on me). A few of the events are not all that interesting, but some are as good as MXC's (such as Big Balls).

Big Hollywood : New Edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' Gets PC N-Word Scrubbing, 'Entertainment Weekly' Okay With That

I have to strongly disagree. I agree that it shouldn't be used as a derogatory name, but you should certainly be able to use and discuss the word as a word, how it was used, what the context was, etc. That's the point, as someone else noted, of teaching the book and putting the use of the word in the proper context.

Yes, not because she's rich, it's just that most candidates have a staffer with the directions to the next event drive while they are working on remarks, talking with the media, etc. This is particularly true of challengers who have to go to more events to build name recognition.

Big Hollywood : 'Modern Family' Season One DVD Review: Promising Start to Popular Sitcom

Hmmm. Maybe, but at least one of the PDAs was from Mitchell (a kiss on the top of the head). I can see that it would make some sense as a story angle (though I didn't see it that way), but still a bit out of place given that it didn't seem to be particularly present the first season. We'll see, I guess.

I also like the show a lot, but I was concerned that the first episode this season seemed to "gay up" the gay couple by having them do a lot more touching and such. I can imagine that the gay community wanted more of what they consider realism in terms of showing affection, etc. Even though the show is popular, I think it's a mistake to go too far in this direction in the second season before the characters are firmly established with audiences who may not be keen gay marriage but still relatively accepting of it. Regardless, at this point I'm just waiting for the sucker punch to come.

"Grab your ankles" used to refer to when you got the paddle for doing something bad in school. I made the reference in a meeting once and a gay fellow took offense. I guess it's like "gay" itself in that the meaning of the phrase has changed. That or some people just look for things they can be offended by.

I rule out Glover too. Even if his political beliefs haven't come through in his acting, his off screen antics are so over the top that they overshadow anything he does on screen at this point. Ditto folks like Clooney, Damon, and the rest of the usual suspects.

I never saw the original show (we didn't get CBS where I lived) so I can't compare it to the reboot. I watched the first episode of the new show and thought it was worth sticking with for a while. It may fit the "formula," but I thought they did okay with it. I must admit, however, that seeing Grace Park in a bikini certainly didn't hurt. That said, I hope they don't go too out of their way to put Park in skimpy outfits. I liked this summer's Rizzoli & Isles, but the ways they found to put Angie Harmon in tight fitting outfits seemed contrived.

". . . but never forget the gals on Fox News are not just stunning, they are competent as well." Absolutely! I love the newsbabes on Fox--and let me be clear, I don't mean "babes" in any disrespectful way, just that they are very attractive.
