As a liberal I'm sad that I can't refute any of these claims - I actually agree with you - but (yes there's a but) all politicians are corrupt. Almost all of them are influenced by lobbyists in some way or another, quite a few of them have sex scandals and ultimately money influences everything - they just don't always get caught. As bad as these scandals are, I'm sure Republican candidates have scandals of equal weight. At the end of the day I'd still rather have Filner or Boxer then some fringe lunatic like Sharron Angle (R-Nevada) or Christine O'Donnel (R-Delaware). In California, Whitman and Fiorina aren't much better - they would both presumably run the state like a business and although both of their businesses were profitable, a State is not a business and there are much more important considerations than money. What I'm saying here is that despite scandals, ideology is still a very important consideration.

A lot of the projections are saying they only have 5-10 more years of sustainability before their main fanbase starts dying and even the new generations of "conservatives" will be too liberal to support their lunacy. I couldn't agree more. It's also ironic the issues they pick because the tea partiers have the most to gain from the policies they are so outspokenly protesting. The Koch Brothers were geniuses when orchestrating this whole thing; the tea party movement has really proven how ignorant the average American is.

I agree with you. And I can't believe I'm saying that. Honestly, I think all religion ultimately boils down to evil. But in this case, we really need to move forward as a culture to be more accepting. An Islamic Community Center is a good thing for Americans because it will show them that the "evil Islamic people" that so many Americans demonize are no different than the Christian majority. They want a chance to pursue "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" as well as the rest of us. Like Christians, Islamic people have a fundamentalist minority as well. Deep down all Abrahamic religions are violent and filled with hatefulness - most people don't take it seriously. To the defense of the tea partiers, Islam has not made much effort to modernize like Christianity has, but at the same time the vast majority of Muslims in America are moderate or liberal. It is not the religion of Islam that attacked America and blew up our buildings, like you said it was a small minority of radical fundamentalists. It's a shame that so many Americans hold the entire culture responsible rather than a few radicals. I've talked to my Mom about this issue and she is one of those on the bandwagon with the tea partiers who think that the so-called "mosque" shouldn't be built. She doesn't really have a good reason other than saying we liberals are "naive" but she nonetheless feels strongly against it. As I said in my article there is no way to prevent the center from being built. They have the civil and constitutional freedoms to do what they want on private property and in the name of religion. The sad part is how many other Islamic centers have been vandalized, looted and even burnt down as the controversy continues. It shouldn't even be an issue much less a national issue. But with the midterm election coming up, I don't see this going away until at least November. I just hope it doesn't turn into a self-fulfilling prophecy and cause another attack. From several news reports I've heard, the Al Queda and Taliban radicals are using this as propaganda to show that the September 11th attackers were right in what they did, that America is unfriendly (even hateful) toward Islam and that they should attack again. If there was another attack, of course, there would be no hope for tolerance toward Islamic people. The far-right would run with this, trying to pass laws incriminating Islam and causing a reign of chaos which would then upset the radicals further into a vicious cycle. Why can't we just live and let live and all be friends?

I think we should take a page out of the book of the Republicans who want to change the 14th amendment. But instead we should change the first amendment to exclude \\\"religion\\\" and just simplify the world by making it illegal.

That isn\\\'t what America is about and I\\\'m not actually serious because if that happened this would no longer BE America, but it\\\'s interesting to think about.

If any of the Bible was taken literally that would be pretty fucked up morality. In The God Delusion, Dawkins goes on to explain how almost no morality actually comes out of religion, most of it is derived by natural selection where altruism = mutual survival. Taking the Bible literally is one of many problems with the religious-right in America.

I have to disagree with you on much of this. In these passages, Paul basically says straight up that women were created as sex objects (and property) of men and they are second class citizens. Much of the same is throughout the bible from Genesis (the supposed creation of Eve from Adam's rib as his amusement/sex object) to Revelations (where it specifically says 144,000 Jewish MEN who have not *defiled* themselves with women will be saved). Also, religion and politics were one and the same (and in a lot of cases still are) during the Biblical time period. The Pharisees (religious leaders) were also the ones in power in terms of politics. So the teachings of Paul could apply to church and state, since they were not separate back then.

Watching the documentary "Lord, Save Us From Your Followers" actually showed me that I am indeed angry (maybe even bitter) toward Christians. I think it softened my heart a little bit toward them but at the same time it isn't going to stop me from fighting. My experience with Christians (the minority, I'd say now) is what originally got me to realize the evils of religion. From there, of course, I began to doubt and am now an Atheist. I guess I can ultimately thank the Christians for liberating me from being guilted into living a lifestyle that is unrealistic and impossible. Plus they do say that education/intelligence and religious belief are inversely proportional. But yeah man - I agree, we should talk sometime. I have a lot of questions for you.

Thanks Steven! And thanks for empowering us to use art and graphic design to have a political voice. Believe me, it was hard stepping outside of my box to do that collage. I was very comfortable with my cut-and-dry marketing layout type things. I need to do some more stuff - I'm hoping to team up with Susan and my friend Alyssa this semester to use art for change. Susan already has some amazing ideas in that department.

I really liked it as well! I would have liked to see more about the love story and more about Connie actually practicing "physick" but overall great book. I would love to read more from Howe and more about the Salem Witch Trials - or at least witchcraft in the 1600s and 1700s - not so much about the actual Salem trials. You should definitely check out The Witch of Blackbird Pond - its written for like 5th-6th graders, but a great book nonetheless.
