You sound like a good swimmer already - I was thinking of the TI stuff in terms of the caller you had that asked about swimming...(miguel?). THe goswimtv.com site also has lots of good drills.

Hi Allan and Stevie, Just listened to the last podcast and thought I would throw this out there - I am not a swimmer and have done only 2 triathlons to date, but I found the Total Immersion swim videos very helpful. The book is ok too, but seeing the demos on video I thinked really helped me understand what the objectives were in improving my stroke. They give classes too, but they are really expensive so I doubt I will go that route. I just did my first 1/2 marathon in 5 years last week- meant to call but was too busy stuffing my face with a bagel... Love the podcast, Monica

Great podcast! Just wondering if you guys are doing the Tussey mountainback relay this year? Or is it already over? In response to the stretching comments- I dont think there's any evidence that static stretching PRE exercise helps, and the evidence for static stretching POST exercise is iffy as well, as far as injury prevention goes. I think dynamic stretching is more in favor now, but I doubt theres much research on that as well. But I think that given the variation in bodies and response to exercise, if it works for you, do it!

Those were the movies. I'm waiting for Running the Sahara to be available on Netflix. Just tried the Agave chocolate gel- YUM! Definitely like frosting and very tasty. Didnt bother my stomach, but did require a lot of water to wash it down as it was so thick. I will use it again. I enjoy the triathlon when over, but am always thinking, geez, wouldnt it be easier to just stick to running? Getting all the gear to the area, setting up transitions, etc, is just a pain.

I love Spirit of the marathon, as well as the one about some Boston runners- cant recall the name. I also watched the Badwater movie that you guys recommended back when Jeff was on the show...of course cant recall the name of that one either (early dementia?). I just did a sprint triathlon after being lazy all summer. I decided after listening to all the stuff everyone else is doing that I should get off my butt! It was fun, and I am definitely going to plan and train for one next year. Keep up the great podcast!

I agree- probably no running naked ever for me. Not really a body image issue, I'm just not interested in exposing myself like that!! I tried a bootcamp style class last year which was a lot of fun and really got me into shape. It wasnt about yelling at you and putting you down though. Good show!

Forgot to mention that the shot bloks come in margarita flavor so if you get sick of the sweet, they are quite salty and a nice change.

Running with the Pack Podcast : Running with the Pack 79: Stevie's Insanity, Seitan, Asthma, Gels, Earbuds, and more

Great podcast! I've used the clif shot bloks with water and they work pretty well. A little bit sticky, but I like that you can just take one block at a time and space them out a bit. I also like Vitalyte (sp?), which has electrolytes but very little carbs and tastes pretty mild. As a sometimes vegetarian, I've used seitan a couple times. I usually buy the premade seasoned version from the store, throw it on a boboli pizza crust with veggies and cheese and it's very tasty. I'm interested to hear what information Stevie gets about her heartrate. Mine also runs high (its been up to 190's at high effort), and i would practically have to walk to keep it under 160 on a regular run. I figured it's just because I'm not fit - but I think Stevie runs faster than I do so it must be something else for her. however, I've also heard that those formulas for calculating max HR are not applicable to everyone, so maybe we just lie outside the curve. Looking forward to hearing about the next tri...

Go for Duathlons! I wish there were more Aquathons as I hate the bike but like the run and swim. I guess IM's dont usually have the duathlon option though. Dont do something that fills you with dread, life's too short.

Hi guys- great podcast! I didnt have a problem with sighting on the one triathlon I've done since at various times I had to breaststroke and/or doggy paddle and I used those, ahem, opportunities, to see where I was. I also hate not being able to see the bottom, but what are you going to do. I figure if there are any creepy crawly slimy things in there, they will be scared off by the thrashing swimmers. I wouldnt worry that much about the bike. Frustrating I'm sure, but geez at least you're out there giving it a go! And you really cant compare yourself to the hardcore types anyway.

Thanks for the feedback. It definitely does not feel as though I'm running on my toes. I have listened to enough of brandon's podcast too that I should know that I should just go out and run barefoot! ;-) maybe I will give it a try this weekend!

Allan- you didnt talk about the insanity workout! I would love to hear more about that next time. I'm thinking about getting Newtons after being plagued with injuries for many years but have been trying to run more mid/forefoot for a few weeks and find that my shins hurt a lot...The calves seem ok, and I thought that is what usually bothered people.
