The role that Al Pacino plays in the movie “And Justice for All,” directed by Norman Jewison, is that of a very smart and honest attorney. Through out the course of this movie Pacino’s character, Arthur Kirkland, is portrayed as a very gutsy man who is not afraid to take chances while in the courtroom. Kirkland fights for what he believes is right and always tells things like they are.
The case from the movie that I will be focusing on is the case in which a judge is being accused of rape. In Kirkland’s opening statement he appears to make a legitimate stance for his client, but as Kirkland continues his opening we soon realize that he is actually taking a stance against Judge Flemming. Judge Flemming and Arthur Kirkland butt heads multiple times throughout the movie, and Judge Flemming wrongly convicts a few of Kirkland’s clients. Kirkland does not take very kindly to the way Flemming runs his court. In previous cases in which Flemming oversaw the ruling which sent two of Kirkland’s clients to jail, Kirkland fights to have them released but fails. Flemming is the type of judge that once something is in his head there is no changing his mind. When Flemming is accused of rape and needs the best attorney Kirkland is his only hope. Kirkland sees this as an opportunity to get back at the judge as well as keep his honest ways in line. Kirkland, in front of the entire court and jury, announces that the judge was not wrongly accused but was guilty of his act of rape.
The way Pacino’s character, Arthur Kirkland, runs his business is very strict. He is very honest and moral, which are qualities that are not often found in attorneys. Most attorneys will do and say whatever they can and have to, so that their clients can receive the lowest punishment if any at all. Kirkland, on the other hand, is the type of person that does what is right, and he will fight for what is morally and ethically right.
I believe that what Kirkland does is a little unorthodox but it is morally right. Kirkland puts his career at risk to make sure that a guilty man gets what he deserves and gets put away. For an attorney to admit his client is in the wrong and turn on him takes a lot. I do not believe that he should be penalized for his betrayal to his client. His future jobs and clients or lack there of will reflect on the way he acted in court and turned on the judge. From a court room order standpoint Arthur Kirkland should be given some kind of punishment, not necessarily disbarment, but a lesser contempt of court would suffice. Arthur did not really cause that much commotion in the court room. The extent of the damage that he caused was minor commotion, and most of Kirkland’s punishment will come form his lack of future clients.

Beaver stadium is one of the greatest stadiums in America. Coming in at the third biggest stadium in the world and first in the western hemisphere, Beaver stadium was not always the structure it is now. When sporting events such as football were first being played they were being played on an open field. The first field held five hundred seats and was quickly deemed too small. The first stadium held thirty thousand people. That was also found to be too small. With the growing number of spectators Penn State football was becoming more than just an extra curricular activity, it was becoming a part of the culture at Penn State. The stadium as we know it now was expanded recently to the one hundred and seven plus thousand seats. Beaver stadium represents landscape as a place because the number of people that impacted the change in location and the change in the number of seats needed to accommodate all the fans. The stadium also represents landscape as History. The University itself owns up to a rich history not even taking into consideration the stadium and the football aspect. Many people of great value have come out of Penn State, and with the challenge that comes from being accepted Penn State has become one of the best Universities to attend. Penn state football may not be the best in the nation or even the oldest in the Big Ten but because of what the students have done for it the stadium has its own ambiance. Walking into Beaver stadium for the first time many people doubt that it could be filled. The rich history and feel for the stadium fills the building to capacity and beyond for every game, even if the weather is unforgivable. The rivalries that come with the stadium just add more to the history. More than what the football team has accomplished, the stadium as achieved great numbers, literally. The number of seats that the stadium holds is that of historic proportions. No other sports stadium in this hemisphere can accommodate as many people as Beaver stadium. As for the culture aspect of the stadium the hundred thousand plus fans have the stadium as one of the top places for college students. Each year lists are put out of “things college students should do before graduating” and for many years attending a game at Beaver stadium has been at the top of the list. Along with the astronomical number of people come the ticket sales. When the team sells over a hundred and seven thousand tickets at an average of fifty dollars a pop the stadium can bring in up wards of five million dollars a game and that’s not even accounting for concession sales. Bringing in that kind of money can only mean one thing, wealth. The town around the University also benefits from the profits because of the number of people that spend the weekend. Essentially the stadium is bringing wealth to the University and the surrounding town.

The Flavr Savr is not the first time the tomato has made a great breakthrough. In the 1960 ’s the harvesting of tomatoes hit a major downfall due to the back breaking work needed to gather them. The farmers would have to develop a machine that could handle the painstaking delicate harvesting. The farmer that encountered this problem, Bernell Harlan, derived a plan to rid his outgoing crop of bad tomatoes. As credited with making the first tomato harvester Harlan is said to have saved the tomato industry in California ( 4 ). Another story that is said to have helped to change tomato harvesting history is that a farmer in California while using his harvester realized that his tomatoes were coming out bruised and broken. Upon noticing this he picks a random tomato and tosses it into the road. If the tomato survived the test than that plat it came from would be saved. Any plant that did not survive the simple test would be rid of. This was the farmer’s way of “survival of the fittest”. After he found his stronger plants he would cross breed them with each other. As seasons past he had finally found his strongest tomatoes. Finally he modified his harvester to accommodate the tomato. When searching on the internet to try to find validity to this story I could not find an exact match to back it up so I am not too sure how true this story is. Whether or not this story is true does not matter because we are where we are today. Everyone that played a role in the advancement to the harvesting industry played an equally important role. If it weren’t for all of the hours dedicated to the advancement of the harvesting equipment then society would still gathering everything by hand.
When someone thinks of a simple food such as a tomato or white rice they do not think of what they can do to the body. Nobody thinks that the tomato can possibly help to prevent cancer and help to drastically improve health. Nobody thinks that the rice could be the first step in solving hunger in third world countries. White rice is mixed with Vitamin A. With malnutrition a major problem the Vitamin A and white rice combination can help solve the problem of getting nutrients to children who can only afford the white rice. Genes from the snapdragon plant were combined into the genes of the tomato plant. The snapdragon is said to have characteristics that can help prevent certain cancers. Combined with the antioxidant lycopene, the snapdragon genes were thought to make a more beneficial product. After its release and further testing the tomato was found to be resistant to certain antibiotics. Many doctors had a problem with a simple crop preventing all of the antibiotics from doing there job in helping people. The tomato was then taken off the market. With the further investigation of the modified tomato it is possible to find an even better gene that could be added. Once a safer and more useful gene is found it can be mixed back with the tomato and once again can the tomato have cancer preventing characteristics.

Making life decisions can and are very complicated. To add to the complication many people change jobs multiple times through out the course of their lives. To say that someone knows for sure exactly what they want to do in life is a very rare thing. A job that is very high stress and deals with the public also takes great consideration. Personally I am still on the fence about working for a police fore. At this point in my life I am leaning towards not working directly in the police field. I am a very active and problem solving oriented person, knowing what I know about policing I do not feel that it is the right thing for me to do at this point in time. I have been looking into working for the Customs and Border Protection division of the government.
After all of the discussions from this class I do not believe my mind has changed nor has it been mad up for sure yet. One of the points that are deterring me from working as a police officer is the amount of “down time” that officers have. On the average shift most officers spend a majority of the time filling out paper work and sitting around waiting. Different locations also entail different job descriptions. If you were to work in a city setting then you would be more likely to be doing a lot of patrolling and making your presence as an officer seen. City settings are more of a preventative style of policing. If you were to work in a more country location than the style of policing will be more of a serving style than a protecting style. Police officers in a country location will be more likely to attend the needs of the citizens, needs like accidents and medical emergences.
One of the most beneficial and helpful sources was the guest lecture with Officer Eddington. Officer Eddington was able to give us some inside information about what he does. The way the lecture was done allowed him to be able to tell us things in an honest way, maybe more honest then if someone were to go to a police station to interview an officer. Officer Eddington told our class some stories of some incidences that he went through. The main story that sticks out is the water rescue incident. In this case a person was in the ocean drowning, so Officer Eddington went to a local beachgoer with a jet ski and asked him to go check out the situation. Once the helping person got up he noticed he was drinking. The story did end on a good note with both people ending up safely on shore.

I feel that the initial reaction to having a gay room mate would be a little scary and unsure. I feel that the only reason for this feeling is that people are so unsure of what they dont know. The more you know about something the more comfortable you are with it. I personally am big on honesty and being open about major opinions and things in life. So for me if i were to have a gay room mate i would want to go into it knowing he was gay. I wouldnt want to find out from someone else or find out in a different way. I would want everyrhing to be very clear about how i felt and how he felt. I remember when i decided to go back to school i looked up my new room mate on facebook ad found out that he was gay. I was hesitant at first because it was sinething that was so new to me but the more i thought about it the less i really cared. The way i see it is that they are people too and just because they are gay does not mean that they are attracted to all guys. I look at it as if it were me i may be straight but im not attracted to all females. Everybody has a type of person tbat they are attracted to the girls that i am attracted to may be completely different than the girls that the next guy are attracted to. Thats why id doesnt reallt matter to me if a room mate is gay. As it turned out i didnt end up living with the guy i ended up living with a guy that did not practice good personal hygene. He smelled all the time and was messy and did not care what anyone thought. I think I would rather have had someone that was gay and clean then the person I ended up living with. In my opinion if he wants to be gay thats fine but just realize that I am not and respect that and there will be no problems. He can do what he wants and I will do whaf I want. The gay and lesbian community is growing exponentially and it is becoming more and more socially acceptable. I could only imagine the hardships that a young gay or lesbian has to go through just to have a similar life to a straight person.I say do what you want and I will do what i want you stay in your corner and i will stay in mine. I do not see any need to judge people and make awkward situatiins

I find videos like this very interesting and touching imagine having to work with only one arm and only has of your body. Now imagine trying to coordinate everything you do and want to do with someone else and attached at the torso. It is amazing to think that two teenagers just turning sixteen do this everyday. These two teenagers are going through life sharing a bond that many people never get to share. Many people say that sisters are very very close but these girls give a whole new meaning to that term. I know how my family is and I know that my family or at least the siblings fight about everything. we could barely share a room let alone share a body. that is not to say that we do not have a close relationship but when you spend every minute of every day literally right next to someone you will develop a different and special bond. I just do not understand how anyone could make fun of the two girls. These two girls have enough to deal with as it is they do not need people making fun of them in criticizing for them for the way they were born. They cannot help the way they were born and the defects they were born with. Teenagers can be so harsh especially now a days especially with all of the changing hormones the teenagers encounter. These girls just want to fit in and lead a normal high school teen age life. I also find it interesting that the twins wanted to do a documentary. Documentaries like these are always seen on tv but not that many of them are from our own home country. Most documentaries involving twins in major birth defects take place in third world countries in other countries around the world. The twins wanted to do the documentary so people would stop staring at them and making accusations about them based on their appearance. It takes a lot of courage to have to go through with they are going through and on top of that make a tv show about all of their troubles and problems of being conjoined twins. Seeing things like this video and these twins really make you think and appreciate life and how good you have it. If these girls can make it through one of the hardest times of their lives high school than anyone can make it through with acne or any of the other problems that teenagers have now a day. I really do feel for the twins to remember how hard high school was for me and my friends I can only imagine having to do it with somebody else attached to me only being able to use half of my body.

Although helping other nations is a good thing and there are many ways to do it I feel that it is more important that we work on helping our selves first. Just like in any other forms of aid whether mental or physical we do not work on helping others until we help our selves first. If someone has a mental issue or anger problems they are not going to try to fix the people that they are affecting they are going to address the issues internally. If we are to help in aiding foreign countries who is to say which ones get help. Who are we (Americans) to make that decision? Helping other countries is a good thing so don’t get me and my opinions wrong, but just think of all the people in the US that are not getting the help that they need. Granted many of these people do not deserve any help but we still need to focus on our own home field before other areas. Just simply by putting our hard earned tax money into our own country can help eliminate many problems that our nation is having financially. For one thing if welfare was a good thing (which I do not think is and do not agree with) we could almost eliminate homeless if we were to put the money into them that we put into other countries. That is just one quick example. On the other hand I do understand why we help other countries… political gain. It is amazing what politicians will do to help themselves. When we (the American government not the people) pour millions and millions of dollars into other countries we are building friendships and allies. Through a chain link connection type of interaction the donating only helps ourselves. Like Sam said in class we are donating different things to different areas of the world but we are than telling those areas that they can only use those products for things that will support us. If the Americans give a business in another country a million dollars they are instructed that they can only use that money to buy things from the Americans. Does that make sense? Is that right? Is that even helpful? In my opinion I just feel that we need to focus more on issues that hit closer to home. So much money is needed for medical research and is not being raised that so many people are losing their lives so that people in other countries can live more comfortably. This whole topic goes back to very touchy question “how many people would you let die to save one person?” and “is it better to lose ten soldiers or a thousand foreign citizens?” because that is essentially what is happening when you give money to other countries.

After watching these videos it is very moving to see the living conditions and efforts that the Haitian people are putting into their everyday lives just to put food on the table and support their children. Many of these people are doing anything that they can just to get by and they are taking great initiative. In each of the videos the workers and business owners put so much care and pride into their work. It is even more inspiring that none of them want to be given anything. When asked what they needed for their business they all said that they wanted to pay for it. To add to that fact many of the things that are needed are very inexpensive to us here in the US.
I work in a kitchen and I have for the past few years. Working in the same field as some of the people from the video I know how strenuous that the job can be. I know that I would have a lot of trouble trying to raise a family and run a peanut shop or bakery. This would be especially difficult not having the proper equipment. To open up a decent bakery in this area of Pennsylvania it would could between $250,000 and $500,000. I could not even begin to imagine doing that without all of the tools and funds needed, and to think that she is doing all of the mixing by hand is incredible.
For the videos about the clothing were interesting to me. I had some mixed emotions about it once I heard about the prices that they were asking. In my opinion in that area she should be asking a mush lower price the lower the price the more people will buy. If people can not afford to buy a shirt at twenty five dollars they will not buy it, unlike here in the US where we have options and we are able to essentially decide what we pay for clothing the options in some of the poorer areas are an expensive shirt or none at all.
Just think if everyone in our class donated a mere five dollars that would help almost everyone in these videos. I am always so hesitant to speak my opinion about donating and all of these foreign countries because you never actually see the people you are donating to and I believe that most of the time it never actually makes it to its actual destination. After seeing these videos and learning more about the Haiti project and learning that it really is actually doing good I would be more inclined to help in the efforts to help these less fortunate and very passionate people.

Welfare is an extremely diverse topic with many different viewpoints and many different arguments. Welfare is one of those things that is good but only in moderation. The more people that are on it the less effective it becomes. Welfare is mainly used by two groups minorities with kids and farmers. In my experience when I was back home I saw an instance of someone abusing the welfare and food stamp system. The girl already having one child admitted that she had another so she could be awarded more welfare. Although most of this money is helping to raise the children, comments like "I just got my welfare check now I don't need to work today" make welfare next to useless. She would also abuse food stamps. She would use them on top of getting welfare and she would apply for and use more than necessary. She would always ask people if they needed groceries, leading us to believe that she was being given more than was necessary. I do understand that many people go on welfare and food stamps with the pure intention of doing good and bringing the best to their family, but in most cases that is not how it turns out.
I was thinking about ways that could help resolve the abuse of welfare system. The other group of people on welfare are farmers who are using the money to work on their crops so that they can keep up with other countries. My solution would be to take the welfare away from the people abusing welfare and give that money to the farmers. All of the people that would normally be on welfare should be employed be the farmers that way they would be working for the money. They would still be receiving the same amount of money only now it will be honestly earned. i know that this may be a very bold and possibly harsh statement and your first reaction might be that this guy is crazy but think about it, is it really a bad thing for these people to work for our hard earned money? I don't think so, yes they may have made some unfortunate decisions but give them the chance to work on a farm and earn their money it would bring respect to them and it would make the rest of the hard working citizens feel more apt to help when someone is truly in need. I understand that welfare is meant to be a good thing and help people get on their feet but in many cases it is abused if this idea to help resolve the abuse issue is to bold than I am all for the random drug testing that is in some areas being implemented. The process to add more requirements can only help resolve the abuse of the system. Any where our government can help save money would be greatly appreciated by the hard working American people.
