Nice catch on that guy, I was driving through Vancouver and was wondering why there were so many cop cars everywhere. Got into Portland and started seeing cops flying all over the place and checked the scanner app on my iPhone... This guy was ALL OVER the place at high speeds - missed the excitement from the Vancouver side, but heard them on Marine Drive, MLK, then up around Chautauqua and Willis, and then finally nabbed in St Johns. Shame he didn't come past my house, I could have had a surprise waiting for him ;-)

It appears that an anti-terrorism specialist like Jack Bauer can't tell the difference between infrared-illuminated photography and the commonly referred as "infrared" thermal imaging! I guess it's time for him to retire for good... And replace him with a Predator, who certainly WILL know the difference.

If a program doesn't work without large federal subsidies, perhaps you shouldn't try to do it in the first place(or at least not until a way is found to make the program fund itself)... Unsustainable spending is killing this country, both at the national and local levels.

All that time(what, a year and a half at least?) working on the sewer pipes and running boring machines, and they should have been replacing water mains instead... I'd love to see a water test on that Pacific Pride station on the corner... Bad enough that the diesel filters always seemed to be clogged there. What was once a lake wants to return to a lake! :-)

KATU - Portland, OR : Teams search for three hikers lost in Opal Creek area | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Portland News,

Wow. 1st, life jackets are required to be on every boat, but no they cannot force you to wear them. Just like they can't force you to buy a car with air bags, or use a seat belt(although they can certainly ticket you for not doing so, they can't FORCE you to do it). 2nd, how are you going to charge a dead man for recovering his body? Now of course for rescues of live persons, it's certainly not uncommon to be charged a fee, especially if it was because you were doing something incredibly stupid or criminal that got you into that situation - not to mention the potential of criminal or civil court action in some of those cases. I think the larger issue here is that people are just too damn stupid. If you can't swim, stay off the river. If you don't have a map, food, and warm clothing, stay off the mountain. What is so difficult to figure out about this? NATURE KILLS. On a similar note, you would probably notice if you pay attention that all the people crying for the reintroduction of predatory species(*cough* wolves) are all city slickers that have no concept of what happens in the wild. Yup, lets bring *insert dangerous species* back to the area - oh look, it's a sunny day! Lets go hiking in that mountainous area full of wolves while wearing t-shirts and carrying no supplies or maps whatsoever... Personally, if you want legal action, I think Darwin should be suing the rescuers for weakening the gene pool.

KATU - Portland, OR : Massive ship, massive firepower; the USS Dewey docks in Portland | Local & Regional | KATU.com - Por

LOL. OK, first of all it doesn't go 56 knots. Well, it might(I've heard that the nuclear powered ships like the old USS Long Beach could leave everything else in the fleet behind in a hurry), but the USN rarely lists any of their equipment as capable of faster than 30-ish knots. Second, 56 knots would not be 35mph. (I'm guessing someone copy-pasted the metric speed in kilometers per hour from wikipedia when writing this story) And seriously, calling a Burke a "massive ship" is kidna funny since it is about the same length, or smaller in many cases, than many of the commercial ships that pass through this area. Maybe large compared to an older destroyer, but certainly a lot smaller than a cruiser or the long lost battleships - so as warships go, they aren't exactly "massive." Now that I'm done with the rant - yes, it does have quite a lot of firepower. And I'm glad to see them here. But leave the "massive" comments for when they finally getting around to building a battleship-sized missile platform!

Then again, there's nothing IN Dufur. Sit on the side of a dirt road and protest the lack of pavement? No fast food, no gas station, no nothing. Not even much in the way of road signs. I doubt that Occupy could sustain itself more than a couple of blocks away from a Starbucks anyway. Although I have to admit that Dufur Mill Road is a nice ride on the motorcycle to head back towards the valley... Just watch out for the wildlife.

Not even. That is a pathetic collection of cheap guns. SKS with a "sniper" stock and some duckbill magazines(probably played too much Battlefield 3, who in their right mind would use an SKS as a sniper rifle?), some sort of rimfire pistol, a couple of scopes, a couple of AR-15's, a shotgun... Not sure what the other rifle is, a Mini-14 maybe? And is that Tec-9 or some sort of lookalike at the far end of the table? And only "hundreds of rounds" of ammo(2 or 3 boxes for each caliber he had). This guy was not a gun nut, and was not even close to "prepared" to do much of anything except sit in a muddy hole like Saddam Hussein did. Which is a good thing for the police that had to go in after him. Be very happy that most criminals are idiots.

They don't "need" medication because their governments control every aspect of their lives, and track them constantly. Just look at Britain's Big Brother cameras everywhere, Sweden's crackdown on private schools and homeschooling, Spain banning cash transactions for businesses, the EU overlords stopping any attempts at democratic elections, North Korea's prison camps for those who do not praise the Glorious Leader well enough... There is no need to control through medication a population that has no guns, money, jobs, or privacy - they are already slaves, and they know it.

Well, they just did(and I think might still be working on a few parts of) a huge sewer project in that area. Also keep in mind that that whole area is mostly artificial fill on an old lake and swamp, and several creeks across the downtown area were shoved into pipes long ago. How often do you think THAT gets inspected? So underground erosion resulting from loose fill, creeks, springs, and even earthquake liquefaction, and most of it may not even be recent, it just finally broke through to the surface.

There are many such bad crossings, and I have had issues with many of them - if traffic is heavy, you are stuck either sitting on the far side of the track and never able to move out, or shoving yourself into the road and risking an accident with cross traffic. Even worse whent there is a traffic signal, as they only put the detection loops on the signal side of the tracks - I got stuck at a turn signal in southern Oregon once while driving a fuel tanker, and ended up waiting about 10 minutes before someone else came along behind me and I had to tell them to go around me and sit on the detection loops so the light would turn. Other times your only choice, if traffic is light enough, is to run a red light.
