mikelaurie : Wordbang Progress

Thanks Jason. I agree on the times for the games, although I'm thinking that 6 hours may work better. I really like the idea of scoring really highly for being the first to use a word and scoring less for the words that others have already tweeted. Although not sure how to communicate this in the scoring mechanism. I prefer your playing style and I'm thinking it would be really nice to be have a certain number of points each day (say 10) that you can give to people for style.

mikelaurie : Open Idea: Daily Twitter Word Game

yeah, cheating would be super easy but there's no prizes, just leaderboards. i guess if it became popular people might cheat just to get up there. i wonder if some kind of crowdsourced cheating thing might work where people can mark someone as a suspected cheat. if there are enough i could go round to their house and shout CHEATER! through their letterbox then run off. i managed to get a database of words working last night so i'm going to have to start dusting of my very dusty old php skillz.

mikelaurie : Rant: Why I Hate Lorem Ipsum

Hi Jason, thanks for the comment and nice to hear from you again! First of all, regarding the 'copy-writing department', I think that fundamentally, the factory production line mentality of developing experiences is really the problem. Having one guy do the pretty stuff then passing it off to another guy who is totally dislocated to do the words is a great way to design a mediocre experience. Having two people working in tendem on the copy and the artwork is a better way to go, but again that doesn't fit with the factory production approach. Regarding the shape, I was pretty explicit about where this can be used. And lorem ipsum == 'a very hacked form of Latin' if you're going to get all Wikipedantic on me ;-) Ultimately, I think that Lorem is a typical sign of a very factory production line approach to design, which, if that's your bag then stick with what has served you well.

mikelaurie : What is a Browser?

Hi Tim, Admittedly, the vox pops aproach is more for theatre than anything else. I just asked my wife what she thought a browser was and she told me it was the thing that you point at things with, you know, that little arrow thing. She's not daft and she probably over-indexes on anything remotely internetty. But the point remains that you just just can't take anything for granted in communications these days. I kind of agree with your destabalising bit but I honestly think you need to keep the ideation bit and the destroying bit totally separate. I still think it's important to have ideation sessions where volume is the key, then have a separate paring down process (preferably with everyone involved) and then start creating prototypes from a few core differential ideas. Then start doing a bit more destroying with end users. I was just remarking to your colleague Stuart that I couldn't agree more with the MxM approach that's evident on your blog. Great work.

mikelaurie : Google SearchWiki

Hi James, nice to hear from you. I personally don't think that Google would ever let their algorithm be sullied by the opinions of real people. I think their motivation is around an understanding that search results are personal and relative to the individual. Personally I love the idea that you can personalise your results but I don't really want to read other people's comments on the results.
