Commentary Magazine : So Why Read (Fiction) Anymore?

I read and reread "Jane Eyre" when I was a teen and young adult. It affected me deeply. Now I'm retired and have time to read both fiction and nonfiction. Several months ago I read "The Wide Sargasso Sea" by Jean Rhys, and I will never think of "Jane Eyre" in the same way. Rhys' book tells the story of Edward Rochester's first wife during her childhood and young womanhood in Jamaca and Martinique. In Bronte's book she is the crazed, sex obsessed monster in the attic, which Rochester does his best to hide from everyone, including himself. Rhys portrays her as a much manipulated daughter of the dying class of white plantation owners in a diverse and very rich West Indian culture.

Commentary Magazine : Téa Obreht’s Anti-War Message

As an example of great literary fiction, I recommend "The Foundation Pit" by Andrey Platonov. The New York Review of Books edition is the best because it's translation is based on the most complete and accurate of Platonov's manuscripts. Very little of Platonov's work was published in the Soviet Union, certainly not "The Foundation Pit" which concerns the collectivization of the peasantry in the Ukraine. Platonov was the only Soviet writer who witnessed the collectivization. He was one of two writers who wrote about it. The other was Vasily Grossman, who probably heard about it from Platonov. "The Foundation Pit" was completed about 1930 or '31. Platonov died in 1951 of tuberculosis.

Breitbart.com : Egypt\'s military clashes with protesters; 7 dead

A clique of military officers, including Nassar, Sadat, and Mubarak, staged a coup in the 1950's and threw out King Farouk. The military has been effectively in power since that time. It appears less and less likely that they'll give up that power. I can't see a civilian government in Egypt having control over its military.

Big Peace : Too Late, Obama Admin Learns What Everyone Knew: The UN Human Rights Council Is a Disaster

The UN was Franklin Roosevelt's idea inspired by the failed League of Nations, which was Wilson's idea (the Senate refused to ratify US membership). John D. Rockefeller, Jr. donated the money to buy the land where the UN is located. I got this information from Reference.com. This bit hardly scratches the surface of the information on that website. I seem to recall that Reagan was so annoyed with the UN that the US stopped paying dues during his administration but I could be wrong about this.

Breitbart.tv : Newt: ‘I’m Going To Be The Nominee’

We're also screwed if Romney gets elected. People who call themselves more or less Republicans are between a rock and a rock. And if Obama is reelected we'll get the worst screw job of all. The way I see it is that's it's vital for us to elect at least one Republican congressional chamber and preferably both. Then we can have 4 years of gridlock (except for some horrible executive orders) and try again in 2016. Maybe I'm too pessimistic. I don't know.

You ought to read up on Clinton's years as governor of Arkansas. He truly had a "sorted" past, and I'm not talking about Whitewater. That was peanuts compared with what has come out about Congressional insider trading recently.

I don't know if Newt will be the candidate or not. A little more humility might be in order and a careful mindfulness of what he says about himself would be in order. We don't want another president who thinks he's God's gift to the masses.
