I am not surprised. I once got into an argument with someone who was outraged that they were executing Stanley Williams (the founder of the Crips street gang); she was also outraged about waterboarding; and I'm sure she would agree to protect this terrorist instead of deporting him where he might be tortured. Why are the Muslim civil rights groups claiming that this is discrimination or a violation of their civil rights? I think it is important for people to realize that many Hispanic and African American people in this country do not support giving Amnesty. Somehow this is not what is portrayed in the media. They tend to show a few African American civil rights activists comparing this to slavery and segregation laws, or they tend to talk about how it will affect the "Hispanic Vote."

I think that, in fairness, the media needs to cover drug cartels/drug smuggling/drug "crystal meth" manufacturing in its coverage of the immigration debate. Not all immigrants are "hardworking families" that they like to portray in the media. There are so many illegal immigrants (or people who make their living transporting illegal things across the border), and I don't know that people like me who live in New York can criticize a state like Arizona where they see the effects of not having a secure border on a daily basis. Many people die crossing the AZ desert; many people who are crossing are not just looking for jobs, but are looking to make money by smuggling their "compatriots" into the country; or looking to make money by smuggling drugs or guns. People in Arizona, it seems, have had enough and I don't blame them. See here, this series on the history channel, Gangland. If you grant all of those Mexicans amnesty, I think they would then be able to bring their family members from Mexico "Family Sponsored Immigration." So, if you give one Mexican "shamnesty" he will be able to then bring his brother and sister to the US. So you are not just "legalizing" the 10-20 million illegal immigrants who are in the US, you are essentially "inviting" 100 million Mexicans. I think that McCain would have tried to pass a similar Amnesty program, but the one good thing about B. Hussein Obama is that the American people are more skeptical of him and his "Hope and Change" Agenda.

I am Hispanic (Colombian) and am opposed to granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. The vast majority of illegal immigrants are Mexican, and it is true that there are a fair number who are involved in gangs/drug-related activity. A common expression, among Mexicans, is "sin fronteras," or "without borders." I , for one, would like to see a much stronger border between the US and Mexico. I live in Queens, NY, and I see so many Mexicans (who I presume are here illegally) and I wonder why the federal government does nothing. A few years ago, I saw a photo of a Mexican man at an immigration march, with a sign that said "Break the Chains." Mexicans need to realize that they are not "enslaved," that they are free to leave the country at any time, and that, in fact, many Americans would volunteer to buy them a plane ticket home, as long as they promise to not come back!

I get the daily free email from the NYT with the headlines, and I am always shocked by the garbage the Op-Ed columnists post (such as Paul Krugman, Nicholas Kristof, Maureen Dowd, Gail Collins, Charles Blow) -- I promise you have never read such biased garbage. I am not surprised that readership is down 8.5%. I live in a suburb of NYC and even the busy commuter rail coffee shop has stopped carrying it. It now costs $2 and I don't think anyone should support that paper if they continue to run such biased Op-Eds.
