The "funny" part for me was when I brought my own tools into the workplace (my iPhone), i was criticized and openly question about who was paying for the device. By management. Often having "toys" is seen as a management-only privilege. So no wonder....

I'm working on my teleporter. Once it's ready we can use it to get you to and from tournaments real quick and easy like. And there is nothing wrong with being a dork, especially if you admit it. It's those dorks who keep it hidden that you gotta worry about. ;)

CPSRenewal.ca : The Education System and the Culture of Entitlement

As someone who just recently TA'd in university, I can agree it's not like grade school at all. It's a financial transaction where students expect A's because they (or their parents) are spending thousands of dollars trying to get them. So that they can "get a good job." If students (my former self included) spent more time learning the material rather than worrying about getting good grades, we'd have a lot more university grads who can write and think critically (completely different blog post entirely) as opposed to ones who just want to get a good job. As someone who had/has a "good job" (on leave at the moment), I "wanted a promotion" for two reasons. The first is because I saw people with similar skill sets and education levels moving much faster than I was for various reasons, few of which had to do with merit. The second reason was because I was trying to pay for the two degrees that I had gotten just so that I could "get a good job." I don't think that grade school or university is the place we need to be looking. Highschool is the time I'd rather go back and fix. I took advanced courses in math and science because i needed to get into university so I could get a good job. I did two degrees so that I could get a better job. And in the end I wish I would have taken band and choir in high school. And I think that it's obvious from the video that a lot of things are worth reconsidering. But from my personal experience, we need to start changing expectations during formative periods so that kids don't get expensive university degrees to learn they don't want to be public servants or engineers and would rather play music.
