Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Sex.

Our pastor preaches on marriage, and a lot of focus on the "neon awesomeness" of sex within marriage every year (although he doesn't use that phrase...). We've taken hits from people in the community, and within the church because they didn't want their kids to hear about it - they don't think it's appropriate to hear about it in church! (And by kids...I'm referring to middle/high school.) Apparently it's appropriate to hear about it on the radio, the tv, at school, books, etc - but God forbid you'd hear about the Biblical view of it in church!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Facebooking your mission trip.

Sadly facebook did not exist when I went on my missions trips...but the pictures are slowly finding themselves scanned in by other friends from those trips...Gotta love those pics of my dreadlocked self (to hide inability to wash hair for a week) from 10 years ago...great times. Unfortunately, no lions were found on our trips, so alas, no facebook gold for me!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Making horrible trades.

Ahhh the joys of being the oldest child. I used to play a game with my siblings called "who can do the most chores the fastest" and amazingly enough my younger siblings, and, maybe the kids my mom babysat, would win almost every time! I was just such a slow child, and they all were great little workers....(this worked until mom or dad would show up and bust my little game, sigh.)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Having a Spiritually Competent Conversation (or at least the impression of it)

I get sucked into these conversations all the time because my small group knows I went to Bible College and I'm on staff at church...apparently that means I should walk around using all of those words I had to memorize, define, and write papers about in Doctrines class...and still don't quite understand! :)

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Not using snopes.com or google.

Ugh one of my biggest pet peeves! Most recent was from a friend from the convent...aka Bible College I attended. On her facebook she FWD a call for ban on Pepsi for deleted "under God" from pledge on can...totally not true! She does this all the time...despite my private messages every time with links to snopes.com dispelling everything she posts. I'm at the point now where I post it for everyone to see on her status comments, but usually they're so fired up no one listens...sigh!

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Awkward Singles Events

Sunday School Speed Dating! (During series on relationships) They scattered chairs in groups of 2 around their very large lawn...and us girls were told to find a seat, and the guys in the group had to come around and get to know us through questions that were given to them. (My personal favorite was the guy who told me I wasn't the girl for him, because I seemed too exciting, and he wanted "a calm life where nothing new ever happened.") I do look back and laugh at everything now! I definitely keep this event in my mind, as I am in Singles Leadership at my current church...and strive not to plan any event that resembles this! On another note, I will agree with Sara, who posted earlier - it does depend a lot on what you are looking for when you come to a Singles group or Singles Event. We strive to make it clear that our groups are not meat markets...We don't exist to get you a date. If you go to one of these events looking for the meat...or hoping to be the meat...you help encourage/create some of that awkwardness! :)
