MetsBlog.com : News: Figueroa to Start in Place of Pelfrey

Yes I think this is right. We don't have a long reliever, and we really need one. Our short relievers are so good that we don't need O'Day, but we could get a lot of use from Figueroa to pick up 3 innings every so often when a starter only goes 4 or less.

Castillo should buy a sponsorship for that hole between SS and 3B. The Luis Castillo Hit Zone. That has a nice ring to it.

Don't understand why Church is swinging there. What was the count? If we are double stealing we should take a pitch and try to get a fly ball for the only run we need. Man, Johan is so freakin good though. Just ridiculously good. Why cant we get this poor guy a win?

Yes, it's true. And is it just me, or does Santana actually look a lot better so far this year than he was even last year. He looks so comfortable. I think this new park wlll help too, cause if he ever has problems it is with HRs and this is a big big ballpark.

I like how Castillo is playing lately, but when I watch him take 3 straight strikes right down the middle of the plate I just want to smack him.

I'm watching SNY actually, and I was pretty upset with their coverage of the play. I really really love the guys too, I think they are the best in the game. But they were too harsh there mostly in going on too long about it. Let's see if Murph can break the game wide open here now and make up for it!

This is really getting me POed. They are ripping on Murphy relentlessly, and yes of course Murphy did not properly hit Wright or throw home. But Reyes also had a great opportunity to nail the runner and threw a two hopper to the wrong side of the plate from 100 feet out. Murph definitely freaked out a bit when he saw the runner going home, but man! Leave the kid alone! I really do think he is doing fine out there, and he is raking at the plate. JESUS! They are STILL talking about it.

Man I don't want to start the criticism already, but I have felt for these last few days that sitting Church would be a mistake given how he is playing, and nothing in that last inning or Sheffield's first at bat changed my mind. What happened to rewarding success?

MetsBlog.com : Buzz: Deadline Deals, Hudson wanted NYC

Excellent, it's true. I just want to add that I genuinely like this team. I know people rip on them for some perceived lack of heart, but I think they are dead wrong. Teams always look bad when they go down 0-10 in their last 10 at bats. But it happens to every team. I like rooting for this team. I think Wright is a great, genuine guy, and Reyes is also a genuine guy and exciting player. We have seen Pelf grow up and we have seen Murphy come from out of no where to become a potential star. I feel like I know these players, even if I know deep down that I don't, and I wouldn't trade it for a hired gun like Manny who has made his career in another town and in another time.

MetsBlog.com : Post-Game: Padres 6 Mets 5

Yes, I cannot understand this idea that a bullpen has to hold a team to 0 runs over the course of 4 innings in a game to do a good job. That just doesn't make any sense. If, over the course of a season you leave your bullpen 20 one run games to secure over more than a couple of innings, and they secure 15 of them, that would be an excellent season. It just isn't going to work like people want it to, where we have a one run lead in the fifth and then it is lights out. It's not possible. The bullpen has been phenomenal these seven games. If it continues like this, we will be just fine.

I can understand the desire to win every game, and even some of the whining, but I can't take anymore of these absurd comments. Church is one of the best outfielders in the game, and Murphy will be just fine in left. None of this is really the issue. Too many people are taking tiny sample sizes and drawing sweeping conclusions from them. It's early. This was a very weird game. So what, so Reyes popped out a couple times and didn't get a hit with men on. And so what, Beltran popped out on a 3-1 swing. What is your point? Beltran hits .270. He only gets a hit a little more than 1 in every 4 times. That's baseball. But he hits for power, runs well, and plays gold glove CF. The Mets aren't gonna get it done every time, and coming on here to vent about how the management doesn't want to win and how this guy sucks or that guy sucks because he didn't get a hit in X situation is just completely irrational. There are only two things about this team that concern me at all. One is whether they can shake their tendency over the last couple of years to shut down the offense in the late innings. And the second (much more important) is whether the back half of the rotation gives the Mets a chance to win. That's it. We are gonna score plenty of runs, especially early, and the bullpen looks great. Let's just give Pelf, Maine, and Perez a few weeks to get it together before we write this team off. If they get it together, and Putz and Rodriguez keep it up, we will be just fine.
