Columbus Startup Blog : Planning Good ~ Plans Not So Much

Good post. I know you realize that you start out saying you don't need a plan, but end with giving most of the questions needed to create a good plan. Those are great questions and merely thinking them through, can mean the difference between wandering and accomplishing. And yes, the planning matters more than the plan. Be careful though, there are many do-ers out there that want to jump behind the wheel without deciding where to go. A 1 page hand-written plan is a low-effort proof-point to remind oneself that you can't arrive without a destination.

I haven't seen Pitchmen, so I may be missing the context here, but should there not be a 4th tip: don't insult / piss off / irritate your audience by being excessively loud and obnoxious? Because that's what Mayes does to me. I've never seen more than a few seconds of his TV appearances because I hurl myself toward the remote and change it to ANY other channel (C-Span? Fine, I'll take it!). - marc ;-)

I'm interested in hearing the feedback from the people that have been attending the Dallas startup happy hours, as we are getting ready to start doing something similar here in Raleigh/Durham, NC. We'll be happy to learn from your best practices. - marc www.northcarolinastartups.com

I don't think she's a patent troll. A quick Google search gives the impression that she's been at it for several years trying to get her "invention" to pay off, but she seems to be lacking a scanning piece in her patent filing. I think she's trying to arm-wrestle you into cooperation to get what she doesn't have. If you sign an NDA I'll tell you what sites I used to find this out. - marc

In general I don't believe there are good or bad times to start a business, its just that the opportunities vary. You would not try starting a typewriter repair business now, but there was a time that that was a great opportunity. As long as you're addressing a market need, you can succeed (with hard work). - marc

Colorado Startups : The Boomerang Founder

Ouch! Sounds messy, expensive and distracting. I hope your Boomerang Founder "friend" reads this. That might lead to a resolution. I will pick this up for my blog; its very good advice. Reminds about an experience with a 50/50 partnership -- two founders with equal ownership. It worked great until the first big decision where "they" were on opposite ends. A 51/49% partnership or a third partner would have resolved any disagreement. But it didn't work that way. A couple decisions later, one bought out the other. It was messy and distracting.

Fort Worth Startup Blog : Facebook is Not a Professional Networking Tool

I'm with you Bradley. I put off joining Facebook for a long time and ended up not even signing up. I find LI very effective and helpful, but personally feel no need to have a Facebook presence. I just don't have the bandwidth to do much with it and would rather focus on LI. As a matter of fact, I still have a Plaxo and Xing account and only keep those because I keep getting connection requests.

Texas Startup Blog : Federal Bailouts for Startups?

I don't blame them for asking. As entrepreneurs they pursue different ways to be successful. If the government gives them money, good for them. But as a taxpayer, I don't want any of the automakers to be bailed out. They need to learn from the fact they operate at a loss.
