: Smearing Conservatives, Raking in Cash

A little bit of science fiction: What if the staff of the SPLC were transported via time machine to seventh century southern Arabia. Wouldn't their Intelligence Report be filled with articles about a religious fanatic who was responsible for hate crimes against polytheists, Jews, and Christians? Wouldn't this little band of misfits be likened to The Order who committed armed robbery to finance their extremist and racist cause. Wouldn't they be railing against the murderous founder and his Arab chauvinism? Wouldn't they attack the separatist notion of one people, one language, and one religion for Arabia? Wouldn't the founder's recitation be likened to the Turner Diaries, a recipe for murder and destruction? Maybe after returning to 2012, the SPLC staff would find that Robert Spencer had a point. Maybe. (Or is political correctness a stronger impulse than truth?)

Flipside, you are right; there is a pattern. However, it is not the Zionist comspiracy that you imagine. These attacks always precede any diplomatic mission or milestone of the peace process. It is the Palestinians who are responsible for the diplomatic train wreck. Most of us are tired of the excuses of the PA, that these incidents are caused by extremists. If the PA was serious about a two-state solution, they would have cracked down on these extremists long ago. In fact, the PA supports these extremists, sometimes openly, and sometimes on the sly. (Maybe it is because the PA is a hotbed of extremism.)

Of course all this aid to Gaza allows Hamas to free its resources for its military wing. Its like the Greek myth. The Greeks sacrificed their best youths to the Minotaur in the Labyrinth which kept the monster alive and growing stronger. Hamas is a monster and a labyrinthine organization.

The ordinary people of Iran hate the mullahcracy. They want the repressive government overthrown. Certainly, the people don't want their country blown to bits. They want protection from the Revolutionary Guard, the fortress of the mullahcracy. Another uprising is inevitable.

The USDA raided a top rabbitry in Missouri. I believe I heard that on the Dana Loesch Show recently. The family was threatened with fines from $90,000-4,000,000. This type of intimidation is going to destroy the rabbit hobby. There are many kids who raise rabbits in 4-H. The American Rabbit Breeders Association is a huge organization that has enough members to have conventions in some of the top convention centers and state fair grounds in the US. The ARBA sponsors many shows in every state that are regularly attended by both youth and adults. They are supportive of 4-H programs for kids and offer scholarships for their youth members. Both animal rights extremists and the government are a danger to small farms. Remember the notorious sheep farm case in Vermont. The USDA seized a herd of rare milking sheep on the basis of problematic evidence that they carried scrapie (mad sheep disease). The family was financially destroyed because they challenged the USDA.

I have read several books about Iran by respected authors. I also have a few Iranian friends living in exile. Yes, I wasn't unaware of the CIA plot that placed the Shah on the throne. Yes, I do understand the concept of blowback. However, do you think if the United States ceases to intervene in the world that Russia, China, and a host of other nations with ambitions would cease too? If we take that attitude we might find ourselves checkmated at some point when our strategic assets are threatened. Caroline Glick has written an informative new column in the Jerusalem Post about the foreign policy spectrum that is found in the Republican Party.

I am sympathetic with Ron Paul's stand on civil liberties. Yes, we need to choose our fights more wisely than we have in the past. Yes, many of our foreign policy decisions have led us into tangled messes. (Iran is certainly one of them.) However, his comment about Iran was disturbing considering the dangers of the mullahcracy. What's done is done. We need to deal with the present reality. Iran has ambitions to control the Persian Gulf, including the Arabian Peninsula. They have been a destabilizing force throughout the MIddle East:. They want to set up missile bases in Venezuela. They have proven that they can strike thousands of miles away in terrorists attacks using their proxies. Their proxies are some of the most sophisticated and disciplined terrorist organizations in the world. The regime that is now ruling Iran are the people that the Ayatollah Khomeini considered dangerous and crazy. (And we know how crazy Khomeini was.)

Ron Paul has a cult following like the Grateful Dead. His comments about Iran were the most foolish statements I have heard in a long time from any American politician. It far exceeds the crazy things that President Obama has said. Ron Paul's isolationism and gold standard fetish are anachronisms in the 21th century world.

If the Catalyst of Chaos gets attacked, they certainly had it coming. The mullahcracy has done so much to fund terrorism and kill American troops.
"Such Congressional tomfoolery bewilders our friends and fritters away our international capital. It also encourages the intransigence of the Israeli government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and reduces the chance of a peace settlement." Who is Kristof kidding? Because the United States government supported Cast Lead in response to Hamas rockets, that encourages the intransigence of the Netanyahu government? I am sure Kristof knows his history, but I don't understand the conflation. It was the dovish Olmert government that finally said enough is enough. Livni was foreign minister. Both have been labeled "war criminals" by the international Left. More importantly, WHAT ABOUT THE INTRANSIGENCE OF THE PA? They have been violating the spirit and substance of the Oslo Accords since it was signed. The IDF doesn't act in a vacuum. It acts in response to rockets and terror attacks.

I don't disagree with you that the medieval mind was intolerant. Yet the crusades were fairly limited in their objectives compared to the wars of expansion of the Arab dynasties. The Cathars were probably the remnant of dualistic and gnostic cults that survived from Roman antiquity. They had been tolerated until the Papacy and French Monarchy focused on them and the "bad" Christian rulers that harbored them. The pope even offered Cathar land in the Languedoc for fighting in this crusade. In modern lingo that is offering prime real estate in the Cote D' Azur. That was enough incentive for greedy Aristocrats. Hussites of Bohemia were a proto-protestant movement. They were also supressed. Yes, the medieval world was intolerant to theological challenges. Yet there were more witch trials in the early modern period than the Middle Ages.

The medieval religious view was authoritarian. Each religious group feared that alien ideas would destroy the eternal desitiny of their people. This motivated their many wars of religion. However, most of the Crusades were directed against a religion that was swallowing Eastern Christendom. The Western Church felt threatened. This religious warfare within Christianity died earlier than the rise of the Enlightenment. It died from exhaustion on the battlefields of the Thirty Years War. The Albigensian Crusade was a religious excuse for French Kings and aristocrats to set their eyes on the rich lands of the Occitane. Even Christian rulers of this area recognized this crusade as territorial expansion of the French monarchy. The Fourth Crusade set its eyes on the jewel of Christian civilization, Constantinople. This strike against the Byzantine Empire was mainly motivated by envy. Jesus did not say to go out and kill your enemies. Mohamed, on the other hand, did. The prophet of Islam dealt treacherously with his enemies.

It is overspending that will bring the system down. Greece is a good example. Austerity measures were enacted to keep the ship afloat. (And its barely afloat due to the extent of damage.) The Leftist policians think they can get elected by promising the moon, but eventually the state breaks down from fiscal exhaustion. How many European governments are discovering this truth. (And enacting austerity measures.) Wasn't Ann Coulter's new book, Demonic, timely?

Israelis are idealists. They had to be to create their sparkling state from the ideological stream of nineteenth century Zionism. Every society has its eccentricities and contradictions. I think this socialist sympathy is like the religious notion of sobornost among the Russians. The hope for peace among the Israeli public testifies to this idealism. However, Israelis are hard realists too. They had to be to survive the wars and terror that were inflicted upon them.

I remember a commentator, a member of the religious Left, saying that the Evangelical Right was the stupidest voting block in the United States: they vote against their own economic interests. However, unlike the commentator, not every voter is looking for a government handout.
