I'm mildly surprised that more people haven't heard of it - it's something I think I was taught about in school (Maybe memory's failing me, but I suspect it was a CDT lesson injecting a bit of awareness of world traditions into the mix.)

One thing strikes me about the D'reg attack, which I think highlights the pointlessness of the stalemate there: When Susan takes up the Duty it's mentioned that she only needs to attend a few significant deaths to keep things flowing correctly (One of which being Volf the Lucky, killed on a battlefield). Other times, repeatedly, when we've seen a battlefield, we've seen Death present keeping things ticking smoothly.

That attack, that killed many of a platoon, wasn't attended to by Susan; if it had been, she'd have bumped into her grandfather, who was present at the moment of death - but no, none of their deaths were sufficiently important; it was all futile, all a waste. The lines so beloved of the Mr. Cletes of the world, amounting to nothing in real terms, but being paid for in wasted human life.

I don't think it was deliberate, but it's a nice bit of accidental satire.

Thanks to associations made back when I was a kid in a household which watched Eastenders on a regular basis, my mental image of Foul Ole Ron is basically much like Big Ron from 'stenders. I think it fits quite well, as well.

I suppose it's another spoilery cover, but I think in this instance I regard that as acceptable since it's also a direct visual reference to a specific album cover; indeed, when I first encountered it I thought it was just trying to convey the themes of the book, rather than a specific event within the book

What other original DW covers reference existing works of art by aping (OOK!) the style? I know of at least one yet to come (Original hardback Avtug Jngpu).
