European Telecom News From The Trenches : Feels like Carrier Under-Investment

Thanks for the complement! Your domain tells me that you are part of the Thesis Theme development. If so can we establish email communications? I have a few questions about some of the features and about compensation ;-) John

European Telecom News From The Trenches : Ethernet Demarcation

Dom, There are a number of companies who have gone down this route; MRV, Adva (with the Purchase of Cavarro), Atrica and Accedian. They all differ in their approach and technology, however... In the case of the Accedian, I would have to say that their most important features would be: -one-way measurements on Ethernet (something that Mobile carriers love) -Loopback capabilities on all logical interfaces (and classifications) Layers 2-4 -RFC 2544 full test suite, ensuring the service works prior to customer acceptance ;-) I do think we'll see a number of new companies getting into this game when 10Gig becomes more prevalent as a end-user service.

European Telecom News From The Trenches : Is OTN really the way forward?

Fred, from a FEC perspective you're absolutely right, increasing reach is obviously very useful. I also do see the advantages of OTN from a multiservice grooming perspective in the long haul. My main point here (obviously not made clearly ;-)) was to counter a number of Vendors claims that Metro/Access gear must evolve to be OTN compliant and to push OTN as a service delivery technology. I just do not see the point of OTN in an IP/Ethernet based service network. Now that I take a look at the post again, I didn't do a good job of qualifying my statement.

European Telecom News From The Trenches : SONET/SDH fading away? Not anytime soon...

Over the years I have learned that for any company to be successful in technology one must adopt the product set like one would adopt a child. Eat, drink, sleep the product and the basic unique value of the product.....or Marc, in your words "tunnel view" ;-) It's what quite a few Tech Industry employees call "Drinking the Kool Aid" of their particular company. Unfortunately this "kool-aid" mentality tends to eclipse the customers needs at times, exactly as it did with me. I was just as surprised as anyone that someone wanted SDH/SONET to stick around for the forseeable future ;-)
