KABOBfest : Tunisia and American social media

take back my comment on this thread folks. just came back from Tunis, and I was shamefully wrong. The Tunisian youth heavily credit facebook and social media networking for giving them the tools to organize, mobilize and execute revolutionary resistance.

KABOBfest : MSAS: Arabic Cultural Language Trivia

Wow. apparently Egyptians and Palestinians have just proved that their racism is tamer than the Syrians. Here it goes, in Syria I was much dismayed and unconquerably outraged to find out that peanuts are called "Fistoo Abed"----which Fayyad rightfully nailed on the head, that they did come from Sudan, and instead of calling them "fistoo soudani" they did and continue to call it "fistoo abed"!!!

let me rephrase my message. This is the first time an arab american has been visible as an arab american. I specifically utilize "visible" as it ties back to nadine naber's brilliant pre-9/11 analysis on how Arab operates as a race in the US, "Ambiguous Insiders, An Investigation of Arab American Invisibility."

Great points Nouf. Of course, I am not promoting an uncritical, victimization of our people and practices. Perhaps more abhorrent, are those who employ such titles as "Zabiha meat" to deflect critical investigations. On the contrary, I think it is incumbent for people like you to speak up against such practices, through "constructive dialogue" and critical engagement with the practioners that make a mockery out of the Islamic tradition of ethical treatment of animals (and beyond that-extra haram times 2, mislead consumers into believing that they are adhering to the ethical treatment of animals). I am no advocate of blind support and am certainly not trying to throw out "neo-colonial" and "orientalist" accusations unfounded. No one is above criticism. I just become easily perturbed when groups like PETA, who have a minute, "cut and paste" wiki page understanding of our culture, come in with their high horses and command us to submit to a higher ethical code.

yes it does exist-we have a mayor, a city council, 100,000 residents, and yes, an election today-why b/c i was born in the states ya ghabee. And plus i think you are getting my parents origin country confused. what i am more concerned about is how sensitive you are about the amusement I get from hearing white people (with no training in the language) say Arabic names. it's just amusing-that's all!

Blogger KABOBFEST : Octavia Nasr: Why Are You SOOOO Stupid?

Thanks Samar-there is no denying that Oprah's popularity in the Middle East is wide-spread and that she is the media darling for almost the same demographic of Arab women to their American counterparts. This short blurb does in fact demonstrate my point, that this is such sloppy reporting. Nasr's goal is to do a story about the Arab world and yet, she only really includes the most repressed Arab female voices in the region, namely, Saudi women-which very easily gives the desired effect of imbuing a false sense of saliency to Nasr's liberal democratic argument. Take a look at what I mean: "Buthaina al-Nassr, is also Saudi.. She’s a popular TV personality who is inspired by Oprah. She tells CNN, “We have many great writers, TV presenters and successful talk show hosts but we have no Oprah.. man or woman. The reason is that our governments aren’t ready to see an Arabian Oprah on TV.” Man, I wish the video was retrievable so you could all see what I am talking about. I think I might just contact CNN to see what the deal is. (btw, my rant is not directed at you Samer, but to all the nay-sayers, what do you think of it?)
