Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Merry Christmas

A belated thanks, Cliff, great job I must say when the final bell was rang you were pretty much right on for your prediction for the season!! I would be interested in what you think about next year? I am thinking about middle of the pack for the beavs in 10? Losing back to back games to the ducks certainly is not satisfactory!! Two years running with a opportunity to get to the Rose Bowl! Can Riley win the big ones?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Vegas postgame

To get to the next level and to play at the level of better competition it is very obvious that a much more divisified offence will be more than necessary, it is a must!! With a much more mobile Q-back, Katz this should open things up some such as the Q-back draw and the full use of "other" team talent! This offence must be reinvented simply because there is to much film available to the competition depicting Rodgers and more Rodgers!! This "new" team must be a North-South oriented team. A two back set with a big power runner who is capable of throwing great blocks (Mack Strong) and also of slamming the line in the red zone with a abundance of strength and power is direly needed!! I have no faith in the present Offensive Coordinator-simply a rubber stamper and yes man!!

I am a long time beaver fan and I think the broadcasting team was spot on!! They would have been far superior field refs than those on the turf!! We deserved to lose but we did get "homered" on several calls! A couple of those holding calls were ticky tack and their receivers got away with murder pushing off "creating space" something OSU coaches apparently do not know how teach!! There was at least one late (out of bounds) hit on Quizz that was not called!! Game travesty was OSU offensive play calling!! Just plain terrible!!

This was a terrible loss and can be attributed to the one-dimension offence of Rodgers and more Rodgers as Coach Mendenhall stated today "it wasn't hard to beat OSU, just stop the Rodgers". Riley should clean house on his coaching staff and start with Langsdorff he has been a miserable failure all year long calling plays!! Look at the red zone field goals!! Look at the Quizz and more Quizz!! Don't you think the better coached teams, Oregon. Cincy, BYU know of him!! The coaching staff is just playing into the opposition hands when they time and again run him into a stonewall. Where is the innovation and imagination on offence. If Canfield cannot get the job done put Katz in for a Quarter-wake Canfield up!! He has heard his name so much, I guess he thinks he just has to show-up?Q-back play was terrible but offensive coordinator Langsdorff was worse and it cannot be said he was stifled by the wind, both teams had to deal with the wind!! BYU coaching was the difference their offensive coordinator knew how to call the game OSU's stunk the place up!!

These beaver football players selected for 1st and 2nd All Pac-10 teams should be extremely proud of themselves and their team as these honored induviduals are selected by the Pac-10 coaches. I don't recall that many beavers ever so highly respected by other Pac-10 coaches. Hip! Hip! Horay!! Onto to Vegas and put a liking on the cougers!! Go Beavs!!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Bowl announcement

There is no doubt from my perspective that the Vegas bowl is better than the Emerald Bowl. Logistics, parking and motels and getting around is terrible in Frisco and the ball park stinks as both teams sit on the same side. The Beavs have a really quality opponent with a former beav as their head coach. They had better bring their A game and figure out how to score red zone touchdowns as BYU with Hall figures to put a lot of points up!! That old Quizz against the stone wall and Kahut with his 3's is a recipe for a loss. These illegal procedure penalties in the red zone MUST CEASE!!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Civil War scheduling

Ditto Cliff, thanks for your efforts! I appreciated your work all season long, I guess in turned out to be a sour-sweet story in 09 for the beavs as many of the prognosticators and scribes picked the season win-loss record to be worse than it was! It turns out the home loss to Arizona was the toughest loss as that kept the beavs from the Holiday Bowl. I have my opinions why the beavs start so slow these are conditioning and rote practice plays . Balance in the offence and a much better defense will be a must in 10 as BSU and parity in Pac-10 looms in the 10 schedule. Red zone problems must be solved!!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Civil War aftermath (updated)

Illegal procedures penalties have dogged this team all year long, so those that occurred in the red zone in the civil war cannot be blamed on crowd noise!! It began against PSU and was rampant all season long. The blame is the coaching and the lack of practice repetitions demanding perfection to eliminate the problem!! The staid, stale style of old school coaching is going to relegate our football program to a 8-9 win program at best and a mediocre bowl!! Let's move into the 21st century and move away from the ah shucks attitude. The reason this program starts so slowly each year is lack of proper conditioning and lack of repetitions demanding perfection. A variety of players must be involved to create balance and to eliminate defenses setting up for major role players as Oregon did for Quizz. That is not fair for Quizz or for others who should be getting time and exposure. Stats are not paramount to wins!!

It is really to bad the beavs cannot get touchdowns in the red zone. I lay the blame at the feet of Langsdorf and Riley!! A severe lack of imagination and innovation. Quizz had no success with duck defense-why run him two times consecutivily against a stone wall, O had the best red zone defense in the conference why not a quick look in pass over the line or sideline or end line routes to the wide receiver or a flea flicker or wild beaver?

The Beavs were doomed by very poor play calling in the red zone you cannot run Quizz aganst a stone wall time after time and settle for field goals if you are going to win the big ones!! Canfield was pretty much right on and his passes to Halahuni and Adeniji were absent in the red zone. The nice balance that was evident in the win over California was not there last night. Defense once again proved it cannot come up big when it is needed!! Great game by Sean and James!

You have a extremely valid concern about the officiating, with that many vocal fans, you know the refs will give the benefit of the doubt to O, just as occured in our 2007 win against them. John Reese made a perfectly great reception of a LM pass for a beaver touchdown but due to fan dissafaction the refs ruled it incomplete!! You are right the O with all their hoopla will have the 12th and 13th men on the field.

It will not be necessary to play a perfect game to beat the ducks, but a near perfect game should do the trick!! Fundementals will be the order of the day. tackling, going for the legs from the knees down and wrapping the ball carrier up and swarming to the ball, and for crying out loud laying out for a tackle in the open field-poor tackling killed us last year or the lack of tackling-Forget the hits and pushes!! And getting on loose balls Yes getting on them forget advancing the ball-LEAVE that up to the offense!! We have the offense but the defense is the question? They must show up and get results, the defense has improved but the duck offense intends to make folly of that beaver defense so they must show up Thurday night and make a strong statement and play lights out!! This is not only for the Rose Bowl it is for the right to live in the state the next 12 months and the PAC-10 championship!! Go Beavs!!

Expect to hear a lot of the same hype that was posted by O fans prior to their 1st game of the season against BSU! Expect about the same results as the Beavs will turn loose their dynamic duo and their major gunslinger and his compatriots on the O. I beleive the beavs will take it to the ducks like they have not seen. We have a great chance of delivering a closed fist to wide open yap!! Go Beavs!!!

Masoli is the driveline on the duck offense shut him down or nuetralize him and you will be in decent shape to win, true James is a threat but he is not near as important to their offence as Masoli. Offensive ball control by the Beavs will be imperative to keep the ducks out of their rhythematic quick offence, the Beavs must be opportunistic on all turnovers (get on loose balls) and score red zone touchdowns. I feel Quizz must come up big in this game and that means the offensive line must have a stellar game. We have great coaching and they know better than we what it will take, I expect them to come up with a great game plan just as they did against California. This has turned out to one of out better teams in recent years despite the youth and I veiw this game as a very good possiblity for a win!!

Shut down Masoli and the Beavs go to the Rose Bowl simple as that. The defense must play with much greater intensity than they exhibited at WSU!! I think the key to beating O is ball control if Quizz can muster a game like he had against USC last season coupled with our improved passing game and defense shows up for 60 minutes we should be alright! Tackles need to be made and not pushes or hits(I hate the words hard hitter) I want to see old fashioned, wrap up tackles! On loose balls-GET ON THEM-Do not try to pick them up and advance them, that is the job of the offense!! Go Beavs!!!

I appreciate your current information and regular updates. Keep us posted Cliff! I bet it is not any cooler in Pullman than it is here in Foster as this is damper and I beleive more penetrating cold. I'm looking across Foster Lake to Green Peter Mtn. about 3 miles North and it has 1.5 foot new snow on the peak-39 on my deck thermometer. Thanks, Cliff-Go Beavs!!!

I sure hope the Beavs use this opportunity to get the monkey off their backs on these road games as they have several key conference matchups that are away games this season. I know they will, my only concern is the withering heat in Vegas. With a win in this one waht a games next week-ends game at Reeser should be!! Go Beavs!!
I like your reasoning a lot better than Kirkpatricks's, he seemed to just jump on the bandwagon instigated by the ducks and their followers. After reading yesterday sportspage where he picked our Beavers to go 7 and 5, I felt he must have applied for a position with the Register-Guard!! His article was treasonous to say the least!! We must let our team know we have confidence in them. I sense this will be a very good Beaver Football Team. I am looking forward to those beautiful fall Saturday's at Reeser and some great football from our Beavers. Good job sticking up for our boys Aaron!
