Wind turbines have a nasty tendency to freeze up in cold weather, and so they end up falling back on fossil fuel power plants. Solar cells get covered by snow and need people out there to clear them off. Meanwhile, the power is down, again, they have to rely on fossil fuel backup. The UK alone has spent billions to get alternative energies online, and are still getting less than 10% of their power from them. The reason is because they don't work very well. The technology isn't "there" yet. The same was true for a number of other classes that were required in the '60s. Some students are gifted mathematicians, and some are gifted artists.
