I'm always amazed by the sports fans who seem to believe that coaches control their players like they're using an XBox 360. Coaches coach, players play, and @#$% happens.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the end of the 3rd quarter didn't Wood have numbers like 5-20 for 31 yards? Doesn't sound like the stat line of a QB ready to throw down field.

KATU - Portland, OR : Woman’s yard sale to pay medical bills gets shut down | News | Salem News

How do you create low-cost universal health care? Our whole medical system is so badly broken that it needs to be burned down & reinvented. But the $64K question is... How? The answer lies not just at the feet of the insurance carrier & the pharmaceutical company, but with all of us. My belief is that medical insurance should be for catastrophic cases and that the rest should come from our pocket. Think of how auto insurance works. You don't use auto insurance to pay for oil changes, but you expect to use your health insurance for a routine check up. You don't expect your insurance to cover the cost of your new transmission, but you want health insurance to cover your glasses. You DO want your auto insurance to cover you when you get broadsided by a car. And you DO want your health insurance to cover when you get broadsided by cancer. We need to reinvent the whole thing & how we use it... in my honest, humble opinion.

Jan is a friend & a fellow small businessperson I've known for many years. I was saddened to learn of her cancer, but was blessed with the opportunity one week ago to help assist with her yard sale. It was tough to see her, a once vibrant & energetic woman, now saddled with the effects of chemotherapy, medications, and, of course, the cancer. But I was so immensely proud of her for standing up & doing everything in her power to take care of herself instead of allowing herself to be a victim. Even in peril, Jan is living powerfully. To the "This is why we need free healthcare for all" crowd, you just don't get it. Some of us (most of us, I still think) don't want to suckle at anybody's teet. We want, and expect, to take care of ourselves. We want, and expect, to take care of our families. And we want, and expect, to take care of our neighbors when they could use our help. And we want, and expect, to aid strangers... at most hoping for gratitude in return... and the knowledge that the stranger we aid will pay it forward. To expect someone else to do that for us & to be fine with that? Well, to see an example of a once-proud society that's been turned into a hopeless welfare State all you have to do is look across the pond. Heartbreaking, truly. John D. Rockefeller (a "right wing nut job") said "Charity is injurious unless it helps the recipient to become independent of it." He was right. And Jan Cline's situation speaks to the fact that government welfare programs are injurious and that they discourage self-sufficiency. If there is a silver lining to all of this (and I know there is), it's that she WAS suffering in silence and they money was trickling in. Now with the publicity this is drumming up, Angels are turning up everywhere :) NOT what I expected to find on Drudge this afternoon.

I think we fans tend to forget that proper technique & football "smarts" (i.e. being in the proper place at the proper time) trump raw talent 9 out of 10 times. It's a team game... and the surest way to blow a play or scheme up... is to have ONE GUY out of position.

He's still inconsistent, but I like what Johnny Hekk brings to the table. Maybe I'm just too enamored with a former all-state quarterback as a punter, but I love that option... and he has been awesome at pinning opponents deep this season. Thanks for the insight on why that's been successful. Also, for those of you who constantly ride Mike Riley about not showing enough fire when it comes to riding the officials, please be sure to read this week's Forde Yard Dash on the espn website. I realize it's mr. Forde's opinion, but it paints an interesting picture of Bo Pelini... and how his ref-baiting is backfiring. Food for thought. I hope the team doesn't miss Pankey too much. Maybe Collins can spy on Luck... he's got the necessary wheels to do it. Need the best game yet to earn a W - Go Beavers!!!

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: USC fallout

I would disagree with the assertion that Mike Riley does not get animated on the sidelines and that he does not "work the officials". I've seen him livid plenty of times. However he has a classy reputation, so he get's a pass. The cameras are regularly trained on the coaches who "lose it" because they're road accidents... people can't help but look. A coach who's known for having class & not going Stoops whenever a call goes against him is not "interesting", and hence does not get shown on camera.

Sure it's happenstance... I agree. But OSU has taken a walk-on (Serna) & taken him to win the Groza. No one could foresee that, either? But the point THAT IS VALID is this: Recruiting punters & kickers is tough business. In fact it may be tougher than the other positions because most specialists at the HS level are taking that role on as an addition to their normal duties. I called HS football on the radio for a few years and it was rare to see a real "kicker" & rarer still to see a real "punter". I can remember a lineman kicking for Lebanon HS and it was uuuggglllyyy! There are few of those fish in the sea, so there's validity to the Beaver approach of letting guys walk on and develop.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: UCLA briefing

Yeah it's selfish, but we forgive you ;) I think you're right though... there's no way James' NFL stock would be very high given concerns over how well he'll recover from the injury & potential doubts over his durability (does oft-injured stick to him given his ACL & the broken collarbone he suffered in CW 2008). And isn't there the strong likelihood of an NFL lockout in 2011? The thought of both brothers playing next year with a full season of experience under Ryan Katz' belt... has a certain, delightful appeal!

I can't fathom how anyone would think Cesca making that kick translates to an automatic win. Lest you remember, Tommie... a made kick begets a tie game... not a Beaver win. Truth is, it was a difficult kick... makeable for sure... but the play-calling and time management leading up to the kick was awful & didn't exactly put Cesca in the best position. That's not what I take issue with, however... Do you HONESTLY think OSU would have been 12-0 if not for Ryan Cesca's wide right? Do you think football seasons play out that way? Face it: OSU should have lost at UCLA in 2000. Do you know how many breaks the team had to get in order to secure that win? Do you think the team would have played with the same urgency during the rest of the season? Would they have played with the same chip on their shoulder & escaped with wins at Cal & over Oregon? And would they have trounced their quality opponent in the bowl game, as opposed to a Notre Dame squad with zero business belonging in the BCS? Ryan Cesca squarely deserves (and accepted) responsibility for the USC debacle in 2001, but to call HIM the reason OSU didn't win an NC in 2000 is flat-out shallow & stupid. **Note to moderating staff: I am not calling TommitT shallow & stupid. He's a good person. Occasionally, however, good people say dumb things ;) One follow up: You actually proved my point about scholarships for D-1 freshman kickers. If you're anti-Cesca then you should be firmly in the corner that believes OSU has had better success developing walk-ons than we have with 4 year scholarship kickers. Two follow up: Wasn't Kyle Loomis a "scholarshipped" punter? How did that work out for us? Not well, methnks.

Because, BeaverDon, D-1 kicker & punters do not grow on trees!!! Johnny Hekker was an all-state QUARTERBACK who happened to have a strong leg. He was very raw but there is obvious talent. He hasn't progressed as rapidly as I'd hoped, but there is something nice about having an ALL-STATE quarterback as your punter... would you not agree? Who was the last scholarship placekicker to come in for the Beavers... no walk-on? You remember a guy named Ryan Cesca? It's been ten years. It's the way we always do it at OSU (under Riley) and guess what, BD? For the most part it's worked out pretty damn well. If you've got something positive to offer JK (or the Beavers in general) go down to the practice field and be a volunteer coach.. be supportive. Otherwise keep doin' what you're doin'... throwing out digs at the kids while shrouded in internet anonymity. It's embarrassing... fans who boo college kids. Go Beavs - Keep gettin' better! Hope your fans follow suit.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Cal fallout

I think there was plenty of killer instinct, BD. Granted it should have been 35-0 at the half (or at least 31-0) but mistakes happen. The Beaver offense let the foot off the gas with a 35 point lead and there was nothing at all wrong with that. The defense didn't let up at all. True the "new guys" got burned for a big play at the end and lost the shutout, but who cares? The experience they got was invaluable. Would you expect... or would you want a Mike Riley led team to destroy it's opponent by 60 points? What more are you going to learn about your team playing against an opponent who's fallen apart at the seams? If the defense had gotten soft & lackadaisical, I'd agree with you... but they didn't. And there's nothing wrong with showing some mercy when you're up 35 against hapless opposition.
