I agree with you on the ceremonial mayor negotiating, but when hiring a CEO in the private sector everything is negotiable. Negotiating a contract for this level of position is very appropriate. Not everyone can be a city manager. When you're hiring the masses for a position with lower qualifications required, you can set the salary and benefits, but when you're hiring a very specialized position, there are more items to be discussed to make everyone happy.

Good call Union Gap. Good way to stretch the budget and seeing the chief out and about is always a good thing. KIMA, you guys really need to step your game up on the basics of journalism. Email has spell check, yet your web publishing software doesn't?? Misspelling headlines and not proof reading articles is just bad form. You guys posted this at 5:18 last night and you can't go in and fix it?? That's just lazy! Do some damage control and take pride in yourselves!

KIMA - Yakima, WA : Future of both police and fire contracts unknown after council votes no | Local & Regional | KIMA CB

social security is an entitlement, not a job. you pay in, you get out...for now until it's bankrupt. but all jobs have some sort of performance review system. i don't work in the business of emergency services, so i'm not qualified to propose what the exact metrics would be for such a system. but ask any cop or firefighter, and they'll be able to tell you who does their job well and who sucks. why should the people who suck be guaranteed future wage increases? just because they pay dues to a union?

you're right, they do it to stay competitive with other employers...but you don't need a union to get competitive wages. what about pay for performance? do your job, stay out of trouble, meet performance metrics, and get pay raises. through the union system, the above average performers are giving their pay increases to below average performers by giving "across the board" increases. i understand inflation and agree that the city needs to pay well in order to maintain good employees, but i don't like the union system in guaranteeing future wage increases for all employees when some sub-par employees may benefit from it.

KIMA - Yakima, WA : Yakima Ave. closed at 2nd Street due to multi-car crash | KIMA CBS 29 - News, Weather and Sports - Y

It's common practice for police departments to support each other in time of need. If Yakima needs back up and Moxee is in town (jail drop off, etc), Moxee can help. Of course assuming that there is adequate police coverage in Moxee at the time. It's a good sharing of resources between local communities. Regarding the siren, who knows. It would be rather stupid to be coming through downtown in an unmarked car with only the grill or rearview mirror lights flashing while expecting people to get out of your way. Not all police cars have dashboard cameras. If I recall, the state patrol officer that was shot a couple of weeks ago in Kitsap county didn't have a dashboard camera.

KIMA - Yakima, WA : Parents concerned for student\'s safety | KIMA CBS 29 - News, Weather and Sports - Yakima, WA | - Ya

If KIMA is Taking Action for You, why are they shifting the blame away from You?? The parents are ultimately responsible for their children's behavior, so if Maudie Schickert is so concerned about the kids and their traffic behavior, she should go to the parents of those kids and have the parents teach the children how to behave at school and around cars instead of garnering attention through the local "news." I agree that people need to hang up the phones and respect the speed limits, but they wouldn't be slamming on brakes if parents would ultimately teach their kids how to behave. Lets get to the root cause of the issue rather than ask the school district to take funds, from an already stressed budget, out of the classroom and put it in an area that parents could control themselves. But then again, that would force people to actually be parents to their children rather than have the schools raise them.

if the city negotiated contracts early and was pro-active vs. re-active they might not be over budget. one decent snow storm constitutes an emergency and is a budget breaker??? in our climate that shouldn't happen.

Tightwad taxpayers??? I don't consider myself a tightwad, I happily pay my fair share, but when the city cries about the cost of removing snow and can't do it within their allotted budgets it makes me wonder what kind of people we have steering the ship. This is Yakima where we have snow almost every year, this isn't Palm Springs where snow removal isn't budgeted. I get tired of hearing how our city leaders failed to budget properly and then they cry about dipping into reserves or threaten to cut police. There are much fatter places in the city budget that can be cut other than the police force. Start looking at privatizing some services like roads and garbage where there are viable private options and discontinue stuff like PAL when we have the YMCA instead of threatening the citizens with public safety reductions.
