I had only heard that the handgun belonged to the mother and that was the basis for her arrest along with the half-million dollar bail. But, you are correct in that the law does not (and probably couldn't) prohibit a felon from being in close proximity to firearms. However, most of the petitions that I've been aware of are for the restoration of rights which includes voting, firearms, etc. And I don't know how often they are successful.
