I almost rented a place like that! It's not unheard-of in Europe (and of course there are the old tenement apartments with bathtubs in the kitchen in New York). The shower in the kitchen would have been maybe fine and kinda fun and cozy (facilitating shower beers!) but the toilet was outside the apartment, in a little closet in the stairwell. That would have been NO FUN.

Toasts, I am coping with dissertation-writing-finishing by getting way into perfumes. What nice things have you smelled recently? Inspired by a long-ago Toast discussion I purchased a sample of Serge Lutens Jeux de Peau (side note: samples are THE BEST! So much enjoyment for less than the cost of experimenting with drugstore makeup!) and it smells like crunchy toast with jam, but sophisticated. So unexpected and good! I am still figuring out what I like, but I think it’s mostly 1) warm spicy things or, completely the opposite, 2) really flowery flowers, but like in a FRESH SPRINGTIME way. Given all of that it’s somewhat improbable that the thing I love MOST at the moment is Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess, which smells like sunscreen but FANCY.

Hope you're still reading -- PhD student in ecology/evolution here, six weeks out from defending, was pretty much in your exact boat when I was applying. I will say that I found grad school straight-up less stressful than undergrad, despite coming with new and significant challenges. I'm getting paid to go to school, for one thing, which is huge. Another thing is that I lucked into a department where overworking yourself is not a status symbol. Also, I find the type of work to be a lot less anxiety-making; like, even if I'm putting in long hours, most of the time it's for well-defined tasks (collect data until all the data are collected), which I find soothing and satisfying. I love my research topic, so reading and writing and studying come really naturally. Deadlines are a lot more...er...optional, because you have more of a personal relationship with the people you report to and can renegotiate your workload as needed. (Of course, try to make sure you are working with good humans.) And finally, I've just grown up and matured and have faith in my own resilience! I know I can deal with challenges as they come up. As others have said, get in touch soon with professors you might be interested in working with. If you're not already, keep an eye on listservs like evoldir and ecolog to get a better idea of the landscape of opportunities. Good luck!

I use evernote for writing down books to read or recipes or things to shop for, but have never used it for research. Do you just put all your pdfs and stuff in there?

I too like paper planners/notebooks! But I always have separate ones for everything which gets unwieldy. It never occurred to me to just have life stuff and work stuff in the same notebook! Hmmm...
