She's one of highest regarded professors at Kendall and in the Arts Community. I've had the pleasure of working with her and you would be hard pressed to find an instructor who is more dedicated to her field and her students.

Anyone who has any knowledge about teaching art at a college level, would know that professors have to keep up their studio practice and consistently exhibit in professional galleries ad museums. It's a requirement to stay up to date in your field and to received any kind of merit raise during annual reviews.

As an Art Educator at the college level, one is required to maintain a studio practice (creating art and exhibiting on a consistent and professional level) in order to gain merit increases during annual evaluations. Those who can do and teach.

As an artist, museum professional, educator and overall art advocate I am disheartened by the lack of respect people have shown Deborah Rockman. Unfortunately, what you don't get to see how she prefaced her question at the lunchbox lecture and the rest of the 45 minute interivew that WOODTV8 edited down to 2 dramatic snippets. Professor Rockman is a respected art educator, artist, and author and is highly regarded in the arts community. She is not an 'art snob' or an 'elitist' and in fact has dedicated her life to teaching and making art! The general populous does not want to learn about art, they just want to look at it and that's unfortunately the difference between an informed opinion and someone who thinks something looks pretty, in a public vote. When someone takes their profession seriously and decides to dedicate their life to their work and make it more than a hobby, that's where divergent opinions take place. This experience is radically different for a professional artist than it is for the public. ArtPrize has done an excellent job at creating a dialogue about art and engaging the public. I loved being downtown this weekend and seeing the masses out and about. However, we are dangerously close to this becoming another Festival.
