I have a pair of Sennheiser 280 pros I've had for like... 8 years (sheesh) that are great... they're not explicitly "sound cancelling" but rather "sound isolating"... they mechanically block sound from the outside coming in rather than adding energy to cancel the sound (which is why actual sound cancelling headphones require batteries). Anyway, they're fabulous, work super well, and sound pretty great.

Godspeed from this fellow office noise sufferer.

oh man, that article is so wonderful. Not only in her overall support of female artistry and calling out the bullshit she sees around her, but also how incredibly vulnerable she allows herself to be. I mean, shit, I was tearing up at my desk.

Bjork is such a treasure. When I was in middle school, I started getting really into her music and it was my first experience with true originality, really. She taught me you could do something wacky and weird and it can be beautiful and powerful and evocative.

OK, so typically I am a total sucker for fancy mascara. Dior forever. But then a makeup artist friend of mine (who does like HBO and movies and shit) suggested Prestige... umm, the one in the pink tube? And it's great! It's a litttttttttle flaky, but not bad. And it's like the cheapest thing at the drugstore. While I definitely bust out the Dior for parties and stuff, on a day to day basis Prestige all the way.

yes! and there was the Ted talk, and then a followup Ted talk I think by Dan Barber, or an associate of his. DB tried to replicate the technique in the Hudson River Valley and I belieeeeve it failed because his farm (Stone Barns) gets lots of visitors, and one of the tenets of the natural foie gras philosophy is that the geese have to reproduce naturally. And apparently goose sex is... traumatic and cruel. For both humans to see, and, apparently, geese.

phone game twinsies! confession: I once stayed home from work because I was sort of sick, but mostly because I was on a Threes streak and dear jesus I just had to get that damn 1536. Had. To. Get. It.

I am addicted to Threes, which is the original 1048 (1082? whatever). It's like a slide-y puzzle of numbers and you have to combine same numbers to double the value, etc etc. Can't explain, can only mindlessly play while sitting on the toilet at work. What.

Thing of it is, depression can be fatal. Mental illness is just that, illness. It has a pathology, albeit one not entirely understood. I know you're trying to be supportive, but taking the stance that depression is not a justified cause of death smacks of the sentiment that mental illness is not real illness. That people can "snap out of it." That family support matters (it does... but it also really doesn't. when I went through a really rough patch of depression, nothing mattered at all, and no dose of familial support ever helped. It made them feel better more than me. See the oft-quoted Hyperbole and a Half when she told a friend / family member she wanted to kill herself).

Also, depression does not perfectly equal "unhappiness" as such. Unhappiness, see, is an emotion. A lot of the time depression is more a manifestation of no emotion, or a feeling of a lack of connection to the world around you, or a loss of interest in... anything. It's like really extreme blase-ness.

Clearly some people have different experiences with the disease than I have, but I wanted to try to make you understand a little better what depression can actually be (i.e. not just a case of the "sads").
