When I became a mother, I did not earn "the right" to be physical with my child. I accepted, gladly, the responsibility to teach him good behavior, and to teach him that all violence is violence, regardless of who inflicts it. My child does not hit. My child also does not get away with bad behavior. He says yes ma'am, please, thank you, and he goes to bed when I tell him to. And all without me laying a hand on him. Imagine that. For the record, I have very vivid memories of the spankings I got when I was a child. Trust me, I would rather remember loving arms and nights without telephone use instead of the belt. My child will NEVER question, even for a second, that I love him. Look into a child's eyes when he is getting spanked by the one who is supposed to always protect him. Wonder if he questions his parent's love at that moment?

Children are people, too. So treat people the way you want to be treated. If you do something that someone else considers wrong, it is okay for that person to touch you, in ANY way, to express their displeasure in your actions? I don't think so. So why teach your children that violence, of any type, is acceptable? Take away a privilege. Time out, loss of phone, loss of computer....There are so many other ways to show kids consequences for their actions. How can I tell my child that hitting is wrong, and turn around and hit him to punish him? Spanking is the EASY way out. It's much harder to actually teach good behavior. Good parenting means being involved, modeling good behavior, being consistent, praising good behavior, being available, teaching, loving and not accepting bad behavior. What exactly would hitting teach? That it's ok to hit if we don't agree, that if I'm bigger than you I can hit you. The real message of the lesson get's lost. If a child learns to not do something undesirable simply from the fear of being hit, he/she's not learning the real reason to not do it. Children who are NOT hit learn right/wrong for the sake of right/wrong, not for the fear of being hit. There's a big difference there.

He should resign or be impeached, but not because of the affair. Let his wife and his God dole out the punishment for that. Like blog choker stated, the people's concern should be that he was elected to run the state, and took a vacation without letting anyone know. Any number of emergencies could have arisen, and he was not there to handle them. I know that if I left my job for a week without a phone call, I wouldn't have a job when I got back regardless of where I had been and who I had been with. The citizens of SC deserve better. So does his wife, but that should be no ones business but theirs.

I am shocked that he was released on a mere five thousand dollar bail. There is absolutely no reason to believe that he won't drive under the influence again, and that article next time might not read that "no one was injured".

I'm not a cynic. He's in jail, having already been convicted. That doesn't go away when he writes a letter to the Post. He has nothing to gain from writing this. Thank you, Jeff, for your well-worded apology. Finish serving your time, as you do deserve to be where you are right now. I wish you the best when you are released, and pray for you that you will not be once again tempted by something that has caused you, and surely your friends and family, a great deal of pain. Don't stop the work when you are released. Go around to high schools and talk to kids. Tell them what you've told all of us. It is by the grace of God that you are not in prison for vehicular homicide. Don't forget that.

I believe that I stated I am AGAINST the tax increase. That being re-stated, my cheeseburger consumption has never caused anyone to die of a heart attack. And driving while intoxicated is illegal. I don't pretend to say that smoking should be illegal. Smoker's absolutely have a right to smoke all they want - but I have a right to breathe non-smoky air. Smoke all you want, just not in my face. Everyone keeps bringing up all of these other bad habits, but the difference is that those habits only affect the one partaking. I do have horrible eating habits. I love fatty food. But does that increase YOUR cholesterol? YOUR smoking, on the other hand, does adversely affect the health of everyone who must participate in that cigarette with you.

I knew someone would eventually take my comments the wrong way. Comeback - I said SOME, not all. So I didn't label ALL smokers. I do know plenty of very good parents who happen to be very considerate smokers. But I also know personally SOME who are the exact opposite. I don't drink, nor do I take pills, legal or non-legal, but of course, like all people, I have vices. I just don't think that MY vices will cause physical harm to YOU. And if the taxes on my vices are raised, I will make the decision to continue to enjoy those vices and pay the taxes, or stop.

I'm an avid (some say rabid) non-smoker. I think it is a disgusting habit, and I am offended when I am forced to participate in it because of other's rudeness. I quietly pay my health insurance premiums, knowing that if there were fewer smoking-related issues taxing the healthcare industry, my premiums would be lower. I loved it when I lived in a county that was smoke-free in all buildings. But I am 100% against raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes. Who will suffer? You can see who at any convenience store or grocery store in town. A mom and a handful of kids, dirty and wearing clothes too small, wandering through the grocery store. The kids get nothing put in the basket that they want, and are told "it's too expensive" or "we don't have the money". But at the checkout line, there is no hesitation in asking the clerk for a carton of Marlboro Lights, please. Kids stay in a running car at a convenience store while dad runs in and get a pack of smokes, and immediately lights one up when he gets back in the car. SOME, not all (cue the hate email now), smokers are very inconsiderate to the care of others, even their own kids. Those people are not gonna put a pack of cigarettes down because the tax is increased. They're just gonna bitch about it at the cash register while they tell their children "no". I see it on a regular basis, so don't start with the "isolated incident" emails. All we can do is let the smokers smoke all they want, and teach our own kids not to.

She didn't learn anything last time, and I have a hard time thinking that she will learn something this time. I will keep her, and more importantly her remaining living child, in my prayers. I think "she didn't mean to do that" just doesn't cut it. She, while under the influence, did something that caused the death of her child. It had already happened to her once. Did she need to put a post-it-note on the baby to remember that "back to sleep" in a bed of their own with no pillows is the ONLY way? I gave birth at Rowan Regional, and that was lectured to me over and over and over before I left the hospital with my son. How is what she did any different than someone driving drunk and taking another person's life? "Darn stooopid" doesn't begin to cover it.

if justice is properly served, and she spends the rest of her life in jail, there is no need to reopen the case of the first baby. of course, this is wishful thinking. i seem to recall another case not too long ago where the mother of a deceased baby (her second to die as well) was charged, but to this day, is walking around free as a bird. i saw her a few weeks ago. her bail was also a ridiculously low number, she posted it, and over a year later, is still out awaiting trial. i think there is no greater crime than harming a child, either through neglect or with intent. whether or not she pays the price in this life, i will sleep tonight knowing that she will pay the price one day.
