KOMO - Seattle, WA : Rainier gunman\'s body might have been found | Local & Regional | Seattle News, Weather, Sports, Bre

Mike --- Good morning and Happy New Year. I haven't been posting, nor reading KOMO...but I just gotta say now that I'm here.....please review YOUR comment here (on Jan 2nd) and those you wrote about Officer Nelson (on Jan 5th & 6th). BOTH of the stories are sad --- BOTH men were fathers, BOTH men were someone's precious child, BOTH men served the public....in BOTH cases, something obviously went horribly wrong!!! Please take a look in the mirror, look inward @ the misplaced anger in your heart -- BEFORE you post. I sometimes feel that your comments are heartless as well, but you are human; I have made some comments which are heartless, I am human. BOTH Mr. Barnes and Officer Nelson were human and made mistakes. For some reason, you are judgmental to ALL of Seattle PD and this astounds me since you seem to be fairly reasonable and willing to be fair @ other times, on other subjects. No Mike, I don't know anyone personally who is a Seattle PD officer. However, as the family member and friend to cops in other jurisdictions, I'm quite saddened by the attitude. Do you think maybe that despite Officer Nelson's poor decisions of late...he may have done some good during his 20 year service as a cop? Just wearing the uniform made him a target, just as it was for Ranger Margaret Anderson. BTW, have you seen the article (posted 2.5 hours ago) about the unnamed WSP trooper who probably saved the suicidal woman's life -- perhaps if he had not come along and pulled her to safety, her family would be sadder than they already are.....hmm, what if he used to be an SPD officer, would your opinion of him or SPD change? Mike, I wish you a good day and a Happy New Year. I am not trying to be argumentative with you, I'm asking you to think about how and what you say, and how it affects others.

Don't know why you got so many TDs either; probably because you brought up the issue none of us want to imagine. Being murdered is tragic enough, but by someone you know is unspeakable. In this case, does NOT appear to be in the "usual" cause (domestic violence, relationship break-up, etc). I speculate this is a "mercy" killing, as she was said to have cancer, and he could not or did not want to continue life without her. http://www.kgw.com/video/featured-videos/Two--102...

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Upset driver takes own life after hitting, killing bicyclist | KOMO News | Seattle News, Weather, Sp

Based upon the articles I have read (more than just KOMO), the bicyclist was already dead. The factor which appears to have caused an increased reaction of guilt, and the accelerated action, was the fact that the pickup driver and the bicyclist knew one another. They had been celebrating the bicyclist's 21st birthday. Perhaps alcohol consumption clouded judgment and had a bearing on the decision to suicide as well. It almost sounds like the driver had gotten out of the truck, realized he killed someone he knew, then called a friend to tell him/her about the accident; more than one news site reports this. So how else would the media have the accounts of : 1) verification the bicyclist had died upon impact or shortly thereafter (since the driver stopped immediately), 2) driver shooting himself upon discovery that he struck the guy he had been partying with earlier. Just my speculation. How horribly sad for the family and friends of the bicyclist and the driver.

He has other issues in addition to FOX news. I've "done battle" with Andy in the past because I have posted comments in support of LEOs, which lures him into attack mode. After I disclosed that I felt some loyalty towards them as I have family and friends who are cops, he followed me around on a couple of stories just so he could argue with me. That's why I have given up and won't post replies to him; there's no reasoning with him, no intelligent exchange of opinion, just hostility and negativity. Oh, in addition to generalizing about cops, he "accused" me of being white, a Teabagger and a Christian. The vitriolic tone implied these categories were criminal or something of equal magnitude.

Re: hyphenated last name. Maybe there is a former husband, and maybe not. When I got married, I hyphenated my maiden and married names so that there would be a "bridge" for professional reasons (identity/career) and to honor my family. BTW, not trying to argue with you, just trying to bring a different perspective in. In jest, but one of my favorite lines recently: "I'm not trying to argue with you, I'm just explaining why I am right". Try it on your spouse.....see if her eyeballs get as big as saucers, like my husband's did, hehehe, good fun!

I have read the story twice, and the only citation I see for the 10 years is the period for which she has struggled financially. I don't know the maximum for the disability payments, but I believe it is MORE than $1500 per month. Also, there are 2 programs that one may potentially draw from. Title 2, typically referred to as "Social Security disability", is a wage-earner's benefit, qualification is having wages in 10 out of the last 40 quarters. So, in other words wages showing up for 2.5 years out of 10. The amount deducted for SS taxes comprises the basis of the monthly benefit amount. The other type is title 16 = SSI = Supplemental Security Income, which pays much less than title 2. To qualify for this program, an individual has very little in assets and eligibility is NOT based upon employment history, just financial resources. It is possible to be eligible for, and be granted benefits from BOTH programs. And no, I'm not telling any government "secrets", this info is widely available and released to the public in brochures, etc. You mentioned something about "one year" --- the article does not indicate the benefits were only for one year. What CM and Blue said about being paid a huge chunk @ one time is correct. What Blue said about waiting for years and years to be approved is incorrect. The cases are decided within months; what Blue may be referring to is that someone was denied and kept appealing and was granted benefits by an Administrative Law Judge --- and that does not necessarily mean the prior decisions were incorrect, people's medical conditions may worsen over time and the point @ which the time the Judge gets the case, the person does meet the guidelines for disability. Also, ALJs just as other judges in different courts do what they want and it is not necessarily in accordance with SS laws. So, for example, if the claimant indicates the disability began on 01/01/08 and 1) was denied multiple times or, 2) did not file until recently, and the claim for benefits was just approved, that person will be paid up to date and in the example I cited, it would represent the time period of over 2 years. Clear as mud?

Considering she is NOT heterosexual, highly unlikely that the act was consensual. While your heart may be in the right place as far as having an open mind and trying to avoid presumptions, it is quite amusing that you are lecturing about gullibility. Either you have not researched this case and are ignorant about the facts, or you have done your homework, and have chosen to look the other way. Here's this for a presumption, or viewed as "benefit of the doubt", you didn't really mean what you typed in your last sentence? Is there a "not" which should be interjected between the "do" and "condone"?

KOMO - Seattle, WA : Reports of officer shooting man in Tacoma | Tacoma News

Since you are not citing facts and providing links, I am not sure how to approach your comment. Yes, thankfully, the number of LODDs are not as high as in the 1970s. I am not sure of what the factors are, and have not researched the decline, but to hazard a guess or 2, the use of Kevlar vests have probably helped, intelligence sharing amongst the various agencies is now possible on a nationwide basis, more technology is available to aid in investigation and apprehension of dangerous criminals, etc. I am not sure whether you typo'd, or if you truly believe there have been "fewer than 200 cops killed in LOD over the past 10 years" --- do you mean per year? Because you realize that in 2009 there were 127 LODDs and this year is not yet finished and the count is 113? I'm not sure how you are arriving at a number of "millions of officers". Currently I believe there is something like 860,000 --- that number would remain fairly static over the years as it would be tied into factors such as population. I don't believe the number is as high as you portend, as far as how many citizens are being shot, I really doubt it is in the "thousands". Also, perhaps people are more likely to be uncooperative with cops now....there appears to be less respect for values, including less regard for authority. I believe the situation between Officer Birk and Mr. Williams is not clear-cut; but I was not there nor am I privy to all the facts in the case. Neither you, nor I, nor anyone else can second-guess what Officer Birk's state of mind was when he fired his gun --- who are any of us to say that he did not fear for his life?

Oh, thanks for editing it so our eyes aren't "polluted". Great, someone took a perfectly great picture of a cat and almost ruined it? Yeah, I find myself saying that too ("kids these days")....I'm amazed at the obscenity I see in print and the filth that comes out of some of their mouths. A 20 year-old nephew of a friend of mine has the potential to be a pro baseball player. I tried to hook him up with a friend of mine who is a talent scout for a pro team. As we are also FB friends, and I was concerned that the college teams and pro scouts would be looking his FB page, I counseled him about not fully spelling out the "F" word and perhaps totally omitting it from his posts --- he looked at me like I was an old fuddy duddy.....at least he didn't roll his eyes at me, or not when I was looking anyway!
