Herding Cats : Raid Leading, Project Runway Style: Make It Work!

Thanks, Anafielle! Glad I'm not the only PR fan out in the WoW circuit. ;) I am a total ditherer IRL, so "keep it simple" is good advice for me in-game and out. As my guild likes to say, all boss strategies really boil down to the same concept: "Kill things. Don't die."

Thanks, Stickers! Just to play devil's advocate, sometimes it's tough to integrate advice on the fly. Sometimes there are related concerns that you might not even know about! It sounds like you need to either talk to your guild officers outside of a raid about strategy, or find another guild. Sitting around not caring and alt-tabbing sounds not fun. :) My recent post Raid Leading, Project Runway Style: Make It Work!

Herding Cats : The ICC Buff Can Bite Me

Not to repeat myself, but nowhere did I actually say that I want to clear content faster than other people. I just want to feel like I (and my guild) have accomplished something when we kill Arthas. I don't care WHAT other guilds do, whether they kill Arthas sooner than us, or not.

Ohhh, this got linked on wow.com! It makes sense now. For those of you just tuning in for this post, my 8/12, 9 hours a week guild is hardly elitist. We're one of those 'months behind' guild, and I don't have any issue with that at all. I realize it's easier to just write me off as an insane hardcore who hates fun, but it's not actually true. ;)

Having an opinion about something is not selfish. Part of my job as guild leader is to make the best decision and go with it -- I have to have run with my opinions all the time. That being said, if the majority of officers and members are pro-buff, then I am not going to force them to turn it off. I AM going to rant about it on my blog, though. :)

I don't know what site you're looking at for numbers, but how many of those 14,000 guilds are new? How many are dead? How many don't actually want this buff, but would like to work through the content at their own pace? That number doesn't actually mean a whole lot. There are plenty of ways to fix a block at 4/12, if Blizzard feels that's a problem. (Whether it actually IS a problem is a different issue.) Create a progressive nerf that goes one zone at a time. 5% on the first wing for a few weeks would let new guilds gear up more. I will repeat what I said earlier: one month to kill unnerfed Valithria, Sindragosa, and Arthas is too short. End of story.

And anyway, frankly I'm tired of middle of the road guilds being overlooked in favour of the loudmouth uber-hardcore and uber-casual. Perhaps being a little demanding is in order here on the eve of the next expansion.

I don't think it's selfish at all. I'm not saying that "lesser guilds" should be blocked forever, but releasing an increasing nerf almost exactly a month after the latest content is FAST. The last wing had Valithria, Sindrigosa, and Arthas. Asking for a more than a month to work on these bosses un-nerfed is hardly condemning scads of guilds to never progressing.

I'd agree with all of those. I think Blizz really screwed up with Naxx. I can completely appreciate wanting the majority of their customers to have access to all this neat raid content, but the launch of WotLK just trained a number of people into expecting new bosses to fall in an hour. Hard modes and achievements?! Wiping is dumb, let's just go back to Naxx. I see the small guild phenomenon as well. On the one hand, we were a small guild too, so I can't begrudge anyone trying to start out on their own (although that was four years ago, and things were very different then). On the other hand, sometimes I selfishly think that people should just face reality and join an existing established guild.

Herding Cats : School of Hard Knocks

Isiene, Thanks for the follow-up! It is the end of my work day and my brain is quite dead, but I just wanted to quickly say that I didn't mean to imply that you wanted to remove Children's Week, although my post kind of sounds like that. I'm just antsy that .. Blizz has a history of lacking subtlety in their response to feedback. They seem to avoid the more interesting, nuanced solutions, and go right for the quick and cheap (literally) answer. So it makes me nervous when I see lots of pushback about things like events on the official forums, because I'm not sure The Powers That Be can tell the difference between encouraging teamwork (or at least not forcing people to put their playtime at the mercy of jerkwads) and just axing things altogether. That's not to say that you're not right to take issue with their delivery of this content, just that .. it make me antsy. For what it's worth, my opinion might also be tainted because I relatively enjoyed School of Hard Knocks. However, I was fortunate enough to be in the right time, in the right place, and with the right people to enjoy it. And, as a healer, I'm used to people yelling at me in Battlegrounds. ;) ("OMFG PRIEST Y NO HEALZ?")

Hi Isiene, First, sorry you had to deal with jerks -- that's no fun! However, people who do things like BoP someone who is capping are clearly horrible with or without a holiday impetus. While Blizz DID create the situation that allowed you to be exposed to this, they didn't cause that guy to be a jerk. I guess my concern is that if Blizz has the mandate of making all special events jerk-repellent, we are going to run out of events. :) They can't fight human nature. People camped eggs (or took camp spots), turned others into zombies, and so on. While I certainly don't condone poor behavior like that and I try to not ever engage in it myself, I would be sad if the very few instances of a dynamic world were wrapped in cotton to prevent idiots from being themselves. I would rather put up with the occasional interaction with mean people than lose these events, personally. But that's just my opinion. :)
