Race Relations Project : Letter from an Inmate

This article was very interesting to read. When Sam started talking about how him and Laurie go and visit “lifers” and have conversations with them and how they are good guys I was a little taken back. For one I had the stereotype that people in jail aren’t nice, why I thought that I do not know maybe because they have committed the crimes and just weren’t good people. Also I thought this way from a previous experience. During my senior year of high school I took a criminal justice class and together we took a field trip to our county prison. It was definitely and interesting trip. I was scared to go because I didn’t know what to expect. The experience that I had was very different than through my experience of reading this paper. Traveling through the county jail both men and women were getting whistled at and talked to in provocative ways as we went past their jail cells. We were all told to ignore it as most of us did. At one part of the jail we were actually on lock down due to the transporting of a serial killer, which was quite scary. Then we got to a part where the prisoners were just on the loose and not behind the bars and that was scary because we had no idea what they would do. At the end a prisoner told us his story and this guy had a sad story and made it apparent that if disrespected him than he would disrespect us, in which one of the boys in our group did and this prisoner was up in his face. So overall it was a chilling field trip. That’s why I was kind of shocked when Sam mentioned that he and his wife would go all the time and that they were really cool people. As I read the entry it is amazing that they work together in a time of grief. As the man mentioned that there are some prisoners that should be there and not let out, but the ones who have changed and thought about their life, it is definitely interesting to what they have to say. But I definitely believe in doing the time for your crime. I am glad that Sam decided to post this because it can give people a different outlook on prisoners. This has lessoned my fear a little about prisons because not everyone is a horrible person in there. Yes, maybe at the time of their actions they were not thinking clearly but if they, have learned their lesson, look back on it regret what they have done, and are able to show they are compassionate people than good for them. I’m sure that takes a lot. I’m glad to have read this article it was very intriguing.

Race Relations Project : Women

The play viewed in class was definitely interesting. In today’s society everyone wants bigger and better everything even with breast size. So it was interesting to see the play came from a different point of view as if small or no chest women would be the ideal beauty type. I agree with the girl in the video. Women and men come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some women are small figured, and others are full figured. Yet I do not believe that our physical traits what determines whether we are beautiful or not. Unfortunately, looks do play a role in our society whether one is beautiful or not. This is somewhat related but in my discussion group we talked about how people dress. We discussed whether or not people dress up for themselves, people of the opposite sex or people of the same sex. We ask the question when girls get dressed up who are they trying to impress if trying to impress anyone at all. Since our group is majority of girls we said we like to dress up and look nice for ourselves. Yet we also appreciate comments that people give us when we do dress up. My personal schedule of classes I am with the same people all the time and all but one are girls. I do not feel the need to have to dress up in front of them since I see them all the time. Therefore half the time I just dress very comfortably. Yet on occasion I do get dressed up for those classes. When I do dress up it is so I feel good about myself. Yes, a part of me will dress up for guys but I don’t have to be revealing. Yet if and when I do go out I to a party or bar I do make the effort to dress up in something nice that I still feel comfortable in. As Laurie mentioned she sees a number of girls flaunting their chest area even in classes, I do not feel like I have to dress that way to look pretty. Also mentioned in my group discussion we wonder if guys ever compliment each other. As a girl if I like her shoes or outfit I have no problem being like “oh that top is cute” of “I like your outfit/shoes”. Yet why do guys have such a problem with that. If they say something like that than guys take it the wrong way as if they are hitting on them. The whole giving a compliment thing isn’t a big deal if you like what someone is wearing, then tell them because it will probably make them feel better and you might have just made that persons day. I know I am happier when I receive compliments.

Race Relations Project : This is totally off the hook

After watching the CNN video of the Japanese video game about raping women I was very disgusted. How could anyone feel that is an okay game to play? That sort of game is calling for all sorts of problems. People who actually have created this game and the people who play it are just disgusting. This video game basically gives people the freedom to rape women through a video game. Even though it is a video game some people may get brain washed from this sort of thing and feel that oh since it is in a video game its okay to do the same in reality. God forbid this gets into the hands of a child; this does not set a good example by any means. Also the fact that really anyone can get these games through the web is just appalling. Why would anyone want to create any such thing? I was also disgusted at the couple that was interviewed that did not have a problem with this game, they were curious so they played this awful video game and did not think too much of it. Then the interviewer asked the woman if she was offended being a woman and all and she replied not at all. I was blown away because I was totally offended by what this video game offers. This game has no benefits for anyone. Sam mentioned that some people might argue that this video game could offer potential rapists an outlet so that they don’t have to actually assault someone. I would highly doubt that because playing this game they might enjoy it that they want a woman in reality to rape, which just causes more problems. I do not feel that this video game should be on the market at all. Also as Sam mentioned how could someone create this and then go to a family gathering filled with female relatives: mothers, sisters, grandmothers, aunts, etc. and feel good about themselves. Unfortunately rape is happening often in the United States and I’m sure elsewhere, now with this game on the market there are going to be a ton more creepers/rapists out there, it really is a scary thing. There should be a law that prohibits these sorts of actions in video games. It is just absurd! It is also very scary that anyone can access these horrific games just through the internet with a simple search and there are the games. This game should banned and who ever have created this disgusting game should suffer major consequences for the hurtful, disrespectful, degrading, and just immoral to women and really anyone in society.

Race Relations Project : The White Minorities

In the article, “Birth to Minorities are Approaching Majority in U.S.” I thought was a very interesting article. I for one do not really pay attention to the whole majority and minority thing; I did understand what ‘groups’ made up the both groups, yet I was unfamiliar with the actual numbers. The whole idea of whites being the minority does not really affect me. It really should not matter either but it was bound to happen at some point that white people would be the minority. Why is this such a big deal that there needs to be a report on it. I guess to get the attention of white people and seeing their reaction to it? I really do not know nor do I feel as if it is that big of a deal. I personally as a white person feel as if my generation we really do not care if whites are labeled as a minority or majority, it really isn’t that big of a deal. Yet if this were happening back in my grandparents’ generation when there were still strong racial issues I feel the white people would have much more concern that this whole thing was happening. It just comes to show how far society has come. If I were to talk to my peers and friends about this I do not believe they would have any problem with this either, it’s just a title. Whether you are considered a minority or majority you are still the person who you are. After watching the short clip in class about the dolls and how black children preferred playing with the white doll, and then reading this article on how minorities are becoming the majority; will children in future generations still feel as if they white doll was better to play with? Or would more children choose the black, Asian or different race doll over the white doll? I think that is very interesting to think about. Overall I did not feel this article was surprising, interesting but not surprising or controversial. Times are changing and will continue to change. It will be fascinating to read an article like this in about forty years and see the results and how different they are compared to today’s society. Just as if would be interesting to read this kind of article years from now, going back to the whole doll thing I think that would also be interesting to see what type of dolls children will play with forty years from now, even my children what they will be playing with. Times are always changing and I feel like this is always going to be a fascinating topic to talk about.

Race Relations Project : If men could menstruate...

Okay, for starters to answer your questions if tampons would be free if men had monthly cycles that would definitely, be a no, unfortunately. Although a necessity, there are a many necessity that both women and men need and we still have to pay a price. For example, both genders need food, clothes, soap, shampoo, razors, and the list is endless, but no one ever able to get these things for free. For the next subject matter of why guys are so uneducated about menstrual cycles is mostly because since they don’t have to deal with it themselves once a month they don’t care about hearing about it. Just as some other people that commented it is probably due to how we are taught about these things in school. Going back to middle school when we were taught about these things in sex ed. Class girls went into one locker room and boys went in to another. Nothing was together and we learned about certain things of our own gender. Even as we got older into high school health classes the subject matter was never brought up; the main focus then were diseases, drugs and alcohol, STDs, pregnancy, and more things along that line. Although I do have to say in middle school the one-year in health class we had to watch the ‘Miracle of life’ in which both males and females watched together. Why is it ok for males to watch a very graphic video of a woman giving birth but not learning about a women’s cycle. Yes I do understand that the middle school age is like the ‘awkward’ stage of many lives since girls are just starting to get their periods and males are going through puberty. Yet each gender still could learn about what happens to the opposite sex. If people are more comfortable with girls going to one room and boys going to another that is fine but within those rooms’ students should be learning about both genders. Also, teachers should feel cool, calm, and collected about discussing this touchy subject matter to their students. If that were the case I don’t think that there would be such a problem discussing it, as people got older. I think women have no problem talking about their cycles to other women like their friends, sisters, or mothers because they are all going through the same thing, yet when it comes to talking about this to our boyfriends, guy friends, brothers or fathers it is then very awkward and uncomfortable. If men for could walk a week in our shoes during that time of the month maybe they could better understand the pain we go through with terrible cramps, bloating, headaches, fatigue, yet we still have to be strong and continue with our lives. If I could stop my days and just lay in bed with a heating pad and ice cream or chocolate I would but that isn’t the case and I continue my life, without people knowing whether or not I’m ‘bleeding’. I for one am proud to be a woman, even though I hate that time of the month in the end it is still okay because I know that I can give birth due to my monthly cycle, which I a wonderful thing.

Race Relations Project : Prom or No Prom: Just Don't Let the Queer Students Dance Together

Like Sam pointed out this is something that would happen in the past, not in today’s society, because as we progress into future generations more and more people are feeling comfortable with homosexuality. I feel that not allowing this girl to bring her girlfriend, as her prom date is ridiculous. I also find it even more ridiculous that the school cancelled the prom all together. Why does the school feel like they need to punish everyone, when they can just pull this girl aside and possibly work out a solution? Constance the female in the article has a right to be heterosexual or homosexual and in this case since she does not follow the so-called “norm” of being heterosexual, her and many others are being punished. Prom is a special time of year that usually upperclassmen gets to dress up all fancy, and just have a fun time. I know especially for many girls they look forward to prom because they may be able to get their hair done, pick out a pretty dress, have their makeup done and really just feel like a princess for the night. I am not too sure if prom is as important to guys but I know that everyone deserves to go. Students should be able to bring dates whether they are heterosexual or homosexual. In the article it states that it could cause “distractions to the education process.” What does that even mean? Seriously. Last time I went to prom was my senior year in high school and there wasn’t anything that dealt with an education process of any sort. Yes they are school functions and people normally have dinner and just dance the night away having fun, people aren’t learning math problems on the dance floor. Getting back to the whole date thing, I do not believe that would cause any distractions with the students because it is seen more often in today’s society. Teachers and other school officials just jumped to conclusions, stereotypes, and ideas in which they were not fond of so—the easy thing to do is just cancel everything. Ridiculous! Also about the controversy of a girl wearing a tux, who really cares? Yes that girl may bring about some attention because you don’t see that on a normal basis but it really isn’t a big deal like these school officials are making it to be. It is more about dressing what you feel comfortable in. Some girls may not feel comfortable in dresses and there are female suits so why not allow them wear that instead of feeling uncomfortable in a dress? This whole situation is ridiculous and I feel that they should continue the prom, allow people to bring their dates whether that means heterosexual or homosexual, and let these students have a fun enjoyable night.

Race Relations Project : What's With the Theme Parties?

I for one do not believe that the majority of themed parties are against certain races. For the most part a majority of the parties that I have heard of do not relate to races at all. If anything most of these parties could be offending toward women. For instance: golf pros and tennis hoes party, CEOs and corporate hoes, ABC parties, beach, underwear, toga, and Halloween parties. I personally do not take offense to these even though I am a female because I am not someone who will get bent out of shape for these silly parties. I know who I am and that I do not and won’t dress in a slutty way. These sorts of parties just give females who like to participate to dress in next to nothing attire. If you’re that type of person who is okay with revealing your body like that and enjoy receiving that sort of attention then hey be my guest. I feel like that there is other ways to get guys attention than dressing like a complete whore. The next sort of parties that happen are holiday parties and by no means do I believe they are racial in anyway. There are Christmas parties; ugly sweater parties, St. Patties day parties and they are not related to race in anyway I don’t believe. Yet then there are the Jersey shore parties. That could be offensive not to race but cultural backgrounds because they are “guidos and guiddettes” that give this stereotype of Italian people in jersey. Not from my own personal experience because I am not very Italian nor am I from Jersey, but my one friend was somewhat offended in the begining because she is both Italian and from Jersey. She feels that the Jersey shore cast represents Italian Jersey people in a negative way. That is just one small who group who acts the way they. She has gotten over being offended but does still feel annoyed, yet she knows she doesn’t act like that so it is whatever. The parties that I feel that could be most problematic are the white trash parties and ghetto parties. These two sorts of parties could be portrayed as racial events because the just bring out stereotypes, which in most cases in reality are not true. College kids when planning these parties, I don’t believe have the intension on offending anyone. I don’t think people think that deep into the themes they are having for their party. They just want a new kind of theme not realizing that their decisions could be offensive in the long run. I personally think that these potential controversial parties should not happen because it is not worth offending people over a party.

Race Relations Project : Native Americans: Question One

For starters, being an elementary education major I feel as if this question and topic for discussion really hits home with me since I am studying what children should and should not be learning. This question and the general topic of this questions I feel is way to critical and deep for any pre-school student. I do not think that at the age of three and four years of age children will understand these topics. Also at this age they are learning the simple things and trying to remember them so with this extra information I do not believe it would be retained anyway. I definitely do believe this is a valid question to bring up though because students do need to learn about these sorts of things. Another question is when are the students at an appropriate age to be discussing these sorts of topics? I feel that even though pre-school aged students are too young, I do feel as if in kindergarten they can learn the terminology of Native Americans. From a personal experience I babysat a kindergartner that attended a Montessori school in which she learned about various cultures, each month would be a different culture. I thought this was a great idea because she learned so much information in a fun and exciting way and was still able to recall the knowledge after her kindergarten graduation. I feel she will keep that knowledge with her since she had learned in a fun way by using songs, games, other activities and then incorporating all that knowledge into the graduation itself. So bringing up the terminology and how they live and other things a long those lines I feel can be started at a young age. Yet talking about genocides is a totally different subject matter. I do not feel as if it would be appropriate to discuss this topic with such young students nor would I feel comfortable teaching to such young students it since genocides are such horrible events. I personally do not think I would not discuss genocides until at least upper elementary levels, maybe around sixth grade at the earliest, and still then I am not sure if that is the right age. I believe maybe toward middle school students, around seventh, or eighth grade can have a better understanding on what genocides are and how they have affected the world. This is definitely a topic that needs to be discussed its just a matter of when is the right time. Overall the discussion of who Native Americans are, is of great importance and should be taught at young ages so they can become aware. Yet just wait until later aged students to discuss problems that have occurred and are occurring with those people and areas of living.

Race Relations Project : LGBT Class - Question One

In my own opinion I do not believe there is a difference whether two gay guys want to adopt a baby or child, or if two lesbians want to adopt a child. They both should have equal rights to obtain a child. Maybe some people may feel that women are genetically made to be a nurturer and caregiver. Therefore some people may believe that with lesbians, there are two mothers and therefore will be great at raising a child. People may think that they are more fit for adopting and raising children. I believe that men can equally be nurturing and take care of a child or many children just as well as straight people or lesbians. Both gays and lesbians should be able to adopt just as easily as straight people. I do no know a great deal of adoption but from what I hear it can really be a strenuous process with paper work and all. So why does the whole process have to be extra tedious for gay or lesbian couples wanting a family. In my discussion group we got into a great detail on homosexuals having children. As a group we agreed unanimously that we felt that homosexual couples should be able to adopt, without question, just as if a straight couple was trying to adopt. As long as they meet all the qualifications that anyone and everyone else does, they should not be judged by whether they are homosexual or heterosexual. Also my discussion group agreed that homosexuals should be able to adopt with out a problem because going through the process is intense but these people ACTUALLY want to have a child. A straight person can easily become parents for the most part unless they have some issue where they cannot, but also a straight person has to worry about those “accident” pregnancies. How is it fair that teenage girls have babies to whom some of them do not even care and raise that child in horrible conditions? Yet on the other hand homosexual couples that really want a child, provide for them, and have a child become a part of their family, yet can’t due to the discrimination toward gay and lesbian couples. It is just really frustrating, even being a heterosexual person, because homosexuals have such problems trying to create families. They should be able to have the same rights as any other person. I do feel that both gay men and lesbian women should be able to adopt with out any problem. I think they would both be capable of raising a child. I do not believe that on couple is more right than the other. I only know of one of my friends who have come from a homosexual family. This kid had two moms, I never really asked questions about if they had difficulties adopting or anything, but I think it would definitely be interesting to hear their story as well as their child’s story on growing up and raising a child with two moms. I just wish that more people were not as homophobic and accepted the fact they want families too just like any straight family.

Race Relations Project : Animals vs. Humans vs. Welfare Cheats

Why would anyone ever call a human being or a group of human beings animals? I think that is such a horrible insult-calling people that are less privileged animals. I highly doubt that anyone would just be on welfare for an easy way out. Its not like they wanted that to be their style of living because I would think that if they had a choice they would definitely choose not to be on welfare. If there are poor people that act like “animals” I would think its because they are going through garbage trying to find food or something like that which is a great shame. As I take a moment and think about the negative thoughts for both rich and poor people as Sam has mentioned I am pretty sure I can think of more negatives about the rich than the poor. I feel bad for the poor and the less unfortunate. I also agree with Sam in the case that elected officials should keep their mouth shut. They should try and “walk a mile in their shoes” and see if they would be able to survive. Maybe if they did so they would have a greater appreciation for their own lifestyles that are better off and not so degrading to those less fortunate. I was greatly offended by the quote in the article stating, “My grandmother…. but she told me as a small child to quit feeding stray animals” as in meaning feeding poor people. That was awful to read. The grandmother mentioned that if you feed them once they will keep coming back just like animals do. How could anyone think of that about people? It is horrible that people have to look down on people like that. Bauer should appreciate what he has. He should not be complaining at all because through these hard financial times he a job that is I’m sure pretty good paying. I feel like Bauer is acting like an animal for his repulsive behavior. It was good to see that Senator Vincent Sheheen was also appalled by the comments that Governor Bauer was making toward these people. It is one thing if you think something because everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but it is a totally different thing if one says it to people. This sort of comment will not go over well with people in the public. A lot more than an apology would be necessary, you cannot take back or erase words you have already said. One cannot change the past or what has already have happened. I just hope Bauer will think before he speaks and do not make degrading comments like that ever again.

Race Relations Project : Avatar and the White Man's Burden

I totally agree with what you are saying. At first I had no interest in seeing the movie avatar because I really am not interested in Sci-Fi genre of movies. Yet after everyone that saw it kept ranting and raving about the movie, I had to find out for myself. So one night I saw it and might as well see it in 3-D if your going to see it. So I did and I loved the romance story that was behind it. I totally agree that movies should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. I for one do not really think about the culture stuff in movies because I do not believe it is of any relevance. Would we still look at it and question the movies intensions if Denzel Washington was playing the Avatar, and he was the one saving the village, or what about if it was a female avatar saving the community or someone else of a different race? I definitely agree that Brooks was contradicting his comments. The whole movie was a great success because it brought in viewers that like all sorts of movies because of all the genres that were portrayed throughout the entire movie. Not only did they have all sorts of genres throughout the movie they also great special affects such as the avatar creature itself was just amazing, the flying dragon figures that they flew on, and all creativity in nature was just super neat. I think David Brooks was giving this whole movie a deeper interpretation that there actually was. I think the whole White Messiah fable is kind of redundant. It is mentioned in the article the plot does not have to be explained because with a White Messiah fable one already know what is going to happen because it is predictable. Something that was not so predictable was with the army troops that visited this far away land. The army people wanted to invade the Avatar’s space for their own greed and selfishness, which is not usual for an army role. Normally they are the ones that want to help others. The Avatars did not do anything wrong since they are such serene creatures. The marine proved us all wrong because he took the Avatar side and tried to help them when they were in danger. The marine became one of them and was accepted by their society. He gained their trust and in the end everything worked out just as in most movies they do. Avatar is just a great movie and I would suggest it to anyone who is in the mood for an interesting movie with a love story twisted in.

Race Relations Project : I Guess It Pays to Learn a Bit About Other People

The article “A flight is diverted by a prayer seen as ominous” was definitely an interesting article to read. It is not everyday that a teenager is arrested for praying. I for one am not Jewish and do not really know or recognize things that Jewish people practice. It is a shame to say that in today’s world we have to be skeptical of our surroundings. Ever since the September 11th tragedy everyone has an eye on things that are out of the ordinary. It really is unfortunate that we as a society have to make these kinds of assumptions and judgments. If I were in the flight attendants shoes I would probably take the same precautions, as harsh as that may sound. She did not know what the teenage boy was wrapping around his arms and head because it is not everyday we see a teffilin being worn. If she didn’t take the precaution there are always those “what if” questions. What if it had been a bomb, or something else that would endanger the lives of others? I believe that the flight attendant did what she thought was best for the safety of all passengers on the air plan. On the other hand I could see why this sort of experience could bring out such issues. This teenaged boy was put through a lot of chaos during the time of the situation. Not to sound like a total hypocrite but I can see and understand both sides of this issue. I can see why Jewish people could get offended with this sort of action. Wearing a teffilin is something that they wear while they pray but people who are not Jewish may not have ever heard of that custom before. Therefore we are ignorant to that knowledge. Even though we do not know of this tradition, there maybe other customs similar of that nature that Jewish people or other religions may not know about. As Rabbi Greenberg mentioned in the article, “You can’t expect the whole world to know what this ritual is all about.” We are not usually taught about other culture’s customs let alone religion while we are young and in school. One may possibly take a class and learn about the different traditions in a college class but that is up to the individual and is not a requirement. Although through such chaos had erupted, the teenager was able to remain calm and was allowed to tell what he was actually doing. As Rabbi Greenberg stated, “Nobody would have assumed it would create panic, but in today’s environment, I guess everything creates panic.” Its nothing against the Jewish religion, these precautions would have been taken with anyone. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Race Relations Project : Clubbing the "Bejesus" Out of Rationality

I for one am a person that was raised Catholic and have received all of my Catholic sacraments. I have attended Catholic school up until third grade and once out of Catholic school I had to go to CCD or some may know it as “Sunday school”. Although I was raised Catholic and taught God is good and he is in heaven and Satan or the devil is bad and he is in hell, as I grow older I still do not know if I truly believe in it anymore. I guess one could give me the name of a “falling Catholic” in which I do not regularly go to Church unless it is for a wedding, or unfortunately a funeral. I cannot judge others for their religious beliefs but I do have some input on the bog, Clubbing the “Dejesus” out of Rationality. With all that being said after reading the bog I was disturbed at what I had just read. As mentioned in the article, (CNN) --- Pat Robertson states that he had made a “pact to the devil” to which brought about the horrendous tragedy in Haiti. Whether or not I believe in God or the Devil how could anyone wish something so atrocious on another living civilization. As mentioned in the blog Robertson sounds like a crazy man that should be put away in an insane asylum. After reviewing the clip of Olbermann about Pat Robertson, I thought it was interesting, his take of the whole situation. Olbermann states in that mini clip that Robertson doesn’t inspire God but “inspires only stupidity and hatred.” Another thing that was interesting is that Olbermann said “I would wish you to hell but knowing how empty your soul must be, to say such things in a time of pain—I suspect the vacant purposelessness life you live now is hell enough already.” He definitely made Pat Robertson look bad. Turning back to religion, since I grew up being a semi-religious person the questions comes about, why would such a close follower of God (Robertson) want to place such evil on other beings, that would then be considered a “sin” which is frowned upon by God. God does not want his followers to follow or do anything with the so-called “devil.” Coming back to reality although Pat Robertson sounds like a psycho person no one can talk to the “devil” unless you may be on something. The earthquake that has hit Haiti is not because of someone making a pact with the “devil”, it is just one of those natural disasters and unfortunately it has been a very devastating natural disaster. We need to do our best to try and help all of those devastated by this awful catastrophe.
