I am so glad I moved to Beaverton two years ago!!! Like a few other people mentioned in the comments, I *already* compost for my garden. As far as I can see, this will lead to more illegal trash dumping in Multnomah County -- as well as a serious increase in urban wildlife (possums, raccoons, coyotes, homeless bums, rats, etc) getting into the garbage cans that sit there for 2 weeks. Especially in the winter! Just imagine how fun that will be, having all those potentially-rabies-carrying (except possums, which can't catch rabies) animals hanging around your yard or surprising you when you take out your trash, and possibly biting you, your pets or kids. Those of you who agree with me, you have my sympathies.

When they announced the price hike, I looked at my Instant Streaming queue (less than 50 titles) and my DVD queue (more than 200 titles) and ditched the streaming. My teenager showed me how to get episodes of TV shows online, and that was mostly what the streaming queue had, so I don't feel like I lost anything and without the streaming charge, I actually pay less now. The Qwikster name is pure stupidity, though -- I like the comment above that suggested Qwikflix; too bad the company couldn't have expended 10 seconds of brainpower to come up with that name!

Gorgeous work, Mr Dyke! I love the Chartres Cathedral labyrinth, and you did a glorious job of it. For everyone else: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartres_Cathedral

This is utterly insane, considering that when my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism, the vet advised me that the radiation treatment would mean my cat would be totally isolated for 4 days, and then could come home but have to be segregated from the other cats in my household and I would have to take special precautions -- for several more days! -- to avoid contaminating myself while cleaning the litter box.

If you isolate a cat (who would obviously get a much lower dose of radiation!) for 4 days minimum, then you sure as hell should isolate humans for at least that long!

The same rule (confiscating a phone if seen in class, and making a parent retrieve it) was enforced in my daughter's prior school (in the PPS district). Although she is normally very responsible about using a cell only outside of class, one day she did have her phone confiscated. At that time, I had not been notified about the rule, and was horrified that I was not advised prior to her being sent home without her phone.

It's unacceptable for my young teenage daughter to be sent home on public transit (her school did not offer school bus service) without a cell phone in case someone bothered or assaulted her and she needed to call for help! That is a serious safety issue, and as far as I was concerned, the school put her in danger that day. Schools need to find ways to discipline misbehavior that do not endanger their students!

Ah, but stealing signs is not a violent crime. Throwing a Molotov cocktail is. Those people (and their neighbors) could have been injured or killed. Not to mention whomever may have been on the road when they committed the reckless driving crime.

Gee, I don't know why anyone would want to put up a big sign in their yard. Freedom of speech maybe?
