I'd agree. There are plenty of things that surely need to be improved within education system across the board. I could speak forever about some of those things that affect our children and shatter their hopes for success, but I'll try to stay on topic.
It's unfortunate that as the economic situation looks bleak, the cost of education seems to increase. I also think it is unfair that a student who claims national citizenship of the US is charged with outrageous prices when he chooses to attend a school outside of his legal state of residence. Yes, out-of-state tuition is obsurd and discouraging to those who seek more and sometimes better opportunities. How are we expected to expand and prosper when our movements are restricted by such institutional barriers? I'm sure we could all agree that college must become "more" affordable, especially for those who narrowly miss the mark to be eligible for federal grants.
Kimi mentioned a great point about using a lottery system. Georgia has been employing the Hope Scholarship program, which is funded by a lottery. It covers nearly all costs and is open to all students as long as they maintain over a 3.0 GPA. It's a great start.
